This year I celebrate 24 years as a pro DJ in the Rave business on exactly the same day as Raindance. Even though I was a DJ from a very young age Raindance was my first big break back in 1989 so I always see it as my proper début in to the Rave scene...

It is a massive challenge trying to pick from so many wicked tunes... so the track list is simply a mixed bag of tunes that bring back great memories of Jenkins Lane and all of the Raindance tours that I was involved in through the early years.

Cologne’s RAVE CLUB  [ ... a brief club history http://www.psychothrill.de/?page=item&amp;post=339 ] had caused quite a stir as a club institution in the Dome city during the years 1988 to 1990, not only throughout Germany, but also on a European basis – e.g. via features in FACE and I-D, as well as through its monthly schedule and its bookings [et al. Marshall Jefferson, Kym Mazelle, EPMD, Todd Terry…] together with the residents. For the first time, there now were club nights in Cologne, which were solely dedicated to House and Acid without any compromise and these also became an example in many respects for anything substantial that has been going on in Cologne’s night life ever since, be it Space Club, "Elevator", Warehouse, PSYCHO THRILL or "Total Confusion" and which laid a foundation for all kinds of sounds that any Psycho Thrill guest has been experiencing since 1991 on a regular basis: Get right on matey – there are no rules, fear is unknown and sleep is out of question!

     “This rather ruff mix of myself- sorry for a few rumbles and mistakes – was recorded during one of my rare solo nights without my partner Roland Casper sometime in November of 1989. It was done with a crappy Rain mixer lacking gain control, only allowing semi-professional monitoring and I would kick any promoter’s ass for this today. The DJ booth also was exposed to some disturbances by visitors, which accounts for some of the skips during the mix. But the complete works of euphoric clubbers and the extraordinary atmosphere, which was created by the combination of a very good sound system, light and sound [two strobes, a fog machine, two flowers], made this club experience so absolutely valuable. That was the place, where we started the shit in Cologne. This mix got re-mastered by a friend from some TDK tapes that were recorded on a Yamaha tape recorder, so the quality is poor at times, but it is an authentic sound document of Cologne’s club life in the late 80s on the other hand. Madchester anthem from 1989, which, along with ‘WFL’ by the Happy Mondays, ‘Voodoo Ray’ by A Guy Called Gerald and ‘Fools Gold’ by the Stone Roses, encapsulates the time when the rainy city was at the epicentre of the dance universe.

Twenty years later I included it as the closing track on my Essential Mix (http://soundcloud.com/gregwilson/essential-mix-greg-wilson-mix-for-bbc-radio-1), and, as with the opening track, the Dimitri From Paris edit of ‘Down To Love Town’ by The Originals, it features Jesse Jackson’s invocation from the 1972 Wattstax festival (which had previously been used to such great effect by Andrew Weatherall in his remix of ‘Come Together’ by Primal Scream).

However, I originally put this together not for the Essential Mix, but to open my appearance at the Electric Chair Last Supper on December 29th 2007. A number of previous guests had been invited to play for half an hour each, as the decision had been made to close this Manchester institution whilst it was still at the height of its popularity. As things worked out, I was the final guest to deejay at this cherished club night - only the residents played after me. I wanted to pay my respects in a proper manner, evoking the spirit of Manchester past, back through the halcyon late 80’s days of The Haçienda to my own time there in ’83, and at Legend beforehand, via a handful of track selections that reflected the spirit of this great music city, for which the Electric Chair, soon to be no more, had written a further chapter. The purpose of this edit was purely to extend the intro of the ‘Pacific 707’ version to suitably build into Jesse Jackson's poignant words before the beats kick in, whilst adding some subtle ambience to add to the overall atmospheric of this wonderful track, which always struck me as a ‘Stranger On The Shore’ for the Rave generation (the evocative 1961 single by clarinettist Acker Bilk, the first British recording to reach #1 in the USA).

This is one of the very first remixes I ever did. It was meant to be a remix of an abba cover called Voulez Vous which was done by Lawrence Malice. However ... It was completely written, produced and mixed by me for Swanyard. It was the first time I worked with Gerald Elms who I went on to work with on most of my remixes and productions. Gerald was introduced to me by Simon Cotsworth ... a Brilliant engineer who worked on my early stuff and who taught me a lot. I give thanks for them both.

Recording under different aliases, the Burrell Brothers were the backbone of Nu Groove Records. This New York label started in 1987 and took inspiration from Trax Records, both musically and aesthetically. This compilation compiles the absolute best of the Burrell's output and in doing so is giving us a valuable insight to the much overlooked roots of New York house music.
