On Abyss This, the first EP released to streaming services by New Orleans-based solo artist t.rust, the genre-defying guitarist continues to explore the sonic wash and jangling range of his instrument: first, in the swirling fizz of Photo Hero, a dreamy meditation that stretches and reclines inside the conjuring of an ambivalent finger, hovering eternal over a Like button. And again, on the towering, operatic Devil Penetration, in which, over a shimmer of plinking, nacre-like piano chords, vocals take on an insistent brassiness, asking and claiming in equal measure: Who Am I. This Abyss doesn't stare back, it echoes.
