'Artemis' is a tech opera based on the myth of the Greek goddess of nature and the hunt, each aria and duet represents a different season of Artemis' life. 'Artemis' is one of the creative outputs from Taana Rose's PhD research project which seeks to innovate opera by utilising novel technologies to create new opera experiences. The piece you will view today was created using TiltBrush in conjunction with Adobe Premiere Pro and was deployed via YouTubeVR. 
Self-experiential prototyping is employed to create the compositions and immersive environments for each version of the opera. The visuals are crafted by painting in TiltBrush using the Oculus Quest headset, injected as 360-degree footage using the 360 VideoMetadataTool, and combined with the audio in Adobe Premiere Pro by Taana Rose.

This song was inspired by a dream, in which indigenous elders were in a boat and we were connecting back to country and stopping the drowning of the earth.

Our surround sound composition was inspired by how people and animals interact with the Southbank parklands and how the area attempts to emulate a natural habitat. For example, instead of a beach or river, there is a lagoon; where there should be rainforests, we get few trees with sample areas of forestation. Sounds including birds, children, buses, water fountains and many more were gathered from various places along Southbank. These sounds are the foundation of the piece and represent converging sonic elements of nature and infrastructure.
Other unexpected and unusually impactful sounds like bottle lids, coins and objects striking each other were recorded to give contrast from the open air of the parkland recordings. These sounds were manipulated through software like Kontakt and Absynth, creating more complex sounds emphasising emotion and atmosphere. These sound design techniques gave birth to many interesting timbres that became the sonic “spine” throughout the piece. The bottle lid squeaking was manipulated into a dolphin song and the children on the playground became pads and birds surrounding you like in a rainforest.
Water sounds were also manipulated and paired with interesting synth pads to create an underwater environment. This is one of many unique atmospheres aiding you on a journey through this surreal world where the environment meets infrastructure.
