It begins in a neutral manner using only white keys, unaffected and transparent. Bubbles float up and wander… and then they pop. They reflect some warm colors, while portraying elements of fragility and emptiness at the same time. The ending is the last bubble growing increasingly distant, until it finally disappears. Completed in August 2006 in Taipei, this concerto draws its inspiration from the flowing rivers and verdant forests of Taiwan, which are directly associated with the indigenous people's surroundings. Flowing water, symbolizing movement and life, forms the primary motif of the first and third movements. The forest brings to mind wood and the marimba; thus, the marimba's resonant tones and the pizzicato strings create the primary sonic elements in these movements. The second movement is an artistic response to the beautiful voices and songs of the indigenous people, celebrating their connection to the forest and the unique beauty of their musical traditions.
