Our guest DJ this week is one of the giants of electronic music in our city and has a national and global presence built over the last two-plus decades of tireless quality work on a sound signature that is very much his own.

Mexican Canadian house music guru Joe Juarez (@aztech_love) broke into the Canadian electronica scene in the mid 90’s. Playing international and national parties with top residencies and gigs at legendary venues and events including Atomic, Velvet @ Icon, Stereo, Black & Blue, Industry, Cirque du Soleil to name a few. He has played and formed amazing friendships with many of the world’s top talents such as Chus & Ceballos, Deep Dish, Sasha & Digweed, Angel Moraes, D Formation, John 00 Fleming, Roger Sanchez, Hector Romero, Sydney Blu and many more.  

Currently he has launched a new project with fiancee Laura Austen called RZN8, a next level DJ -VJ series with over 10,000 views! The episodes can be seen on YOUTUBE on the AZTECH LOVE page or on the website where sets and episodes are available. Stay tuned for RZN8 LIVE events coming soon.

Joe is also the guy who gave me some of my own early opportunities as a DJ by letting me open some of his legendary Velvet @ Icon parties. If the scene in Ottawa is as vibrant as it has become, it’s thanks to guys like Joe who planted the seeds and did all the heavy lifting right from the early days and never stopped loving the music. 

It’s an honour to welcome him on OPV with this exclusive set he gifts us this week.

Following his cosmic travels with “Rings of Saturn,” Didi + Ping is back on Earth with his two-track EP “Pathfinder + Solitude.”  Adventure calls, and “Pathfinder” leads the charge with fiery mallet percussion and rubbery bass-lines that beckon the listener from beyond the horizon.  This epic song is an inspiring force, made to spark fire on the dance floor.  Comparatively, “Solitude” is a gentle thought, classically composed to soothe and relax with emotional chords and lush violins.  It is a fitting companion track that summons serenity for those who feel they take the road less travelled.

HAFT, the Iranian duo of Sam Nasehi and Amir Subb, are known for fusing hypnotic synths, deep- rooted pads, and intricate percussion into a sound that bridges traditional textures with modern progressive house. Their debut three-track EP on Balance Music delivers a journey filled with psychedelic undercurrents and shimmering atmospheres that is crafted equally for the dance floor and for deep listening.

The brooding ‘Driftor’ is designed to nudge any DJ set in the right direction. An off-beat bass drives the engine, allowing you to comfortably sit in the pocket of its inviting narrative. Steely drums and percussion form a cohesive frame, while a bag of tasteful effects, samples, and stabs fill the remaining spaces. Once the breakdown hits, in all its subtlety, you know you’re in the hands of professionals. This is essential prog, designed for any occasion.

There is an undercurrent of psychedelia running through ‘Myntal’, hypnotic and consuming. Low- end frequencies double as notes, merging with the bass to create a dizzying effect. Its main-room identity, however, is confirmed by drums that strut forward with propulsive energy. It all points towards a seductive breakdown, its layering teasing a drop that confirms it: this is designed for floors ready to ignite.

Filled with depth, ‘Prism’ shimmers and shakes as synths and stabs perpetually morph. The result is a continuous stream of sonic moments to lose yourself in. Thankfully, the dense bassline and drums bring you back from the edge of hypnosis, filling the space with an elastic energy as buoyant as a trampoline. Then comes the breakdown: bells dissolve into minor-key haze, half beautiful, half surreal: an inviting dream-logic that is hard to deny.
