The dog started his techno journey in the swedish underground in a collective called Point Nemo. After getting out of prison in late 2020 he chose to focus less on djing and more on producing, and started a new label called Radiance with a fellow dog. The dog on acid is currently a ghost, not alive but not dead either. It is a weird dog for sure.

The Wroclaw-based Rethe, while of relatively young age, has already gathered quite a reputation with his releases for Emmanuel’s ARTS, as well as his own creative outlet Całość - to name but a few. With his release for Kantrasta, he continues to expand his creative boundaries - he successfully merges funky, dynamic techno with lo-fi, dub and even jazz elements.

“Between the Sea and the Sky” is probably the EP’s most straight-forward track:: massive driving beat and fierce percussion combined with Detroit-ish arpeggiated synth makes up for a real club banger.

“Generator” follows the approach - however, this time halfway through the track a breakdown brings in a much welcome dub chord. Luckily, somehow in Rethe’s interpretation the fusion of dub and techno somehow manages not to sound like yet another Basic Channel rip-off.

The titular “Stairwell” takes a very different approach - it opens with a sinister synth line, bringing to mind some of James Ruskin’s more recent output. Yet again, halfway through the track we are surprised with dubby, lofi chords, which provide it with a sense of unexpected warmth.

EP’s last offering comes from none other than the legendary DJ Rolando, with his interpretation of “Staircase”. While being based on multiple elements of Rethe’s original track, the accents definitely shift. You can hear that Rolando’s roots lie in Detroit, as his remix blends the boundaries between house and techno and sounds... moody, almost melancholic.

Tessen were folding fans with concealed outer spokes made of heavy iron plates. Some swordsmanship schools provided training of the tessen as a weapon. Besides using the razor-sharp spokes as an attacking tool, the tessen was also used as a throwing weapon, for fending off knives and darts and as a swimming aid. Samurai could also secretly take them to places where overt weapons were not allowed.

Get ready to get into the “earthshaketrance”. With his background in jazz music, Kancheli shows a finely attuned feel for rhythm. Trance leaning tunes on the A side tickle your dancing soles, making them peak time material. Playing with emotive evocations of hope, this is music to transcend to. The B side strikes a darker chord, with Kancheli using acid synths and combining them with vocals reminiscent of wave. The release finishes on a remix by Volruptus. All in all, the well-crafted first solo release of a dance floor favourite.

B1 - Japanese Morning

With “As We Were Saying”, Bassiani resident Héctor Oaks presented his first full-length album. Two years later it’s time to share a new take on Oaks’ vision of rave culture. He brings together an intimate selection of fellow artists and the result is ‘often plus, never minus’ through and through.
DJ Stingray starts off with a dismantled version of “Forwarded State of Evidence”, he keeps the vocals and contrasts them with a metallic beat. Berlin’s Somewhen is next on A2 with a dancefloor-oriented version of “Is Imminent“, originally the opener of the album, now sped up and reworked.
Flipping to the B-side, things get deep: what’s striking about “Re-Improved Motto“ is how Voiski (a fellow Bassiani resident) has kept the beautiful melody of the original and steered it towards acid. Parrish Smith’s remix of “After All She Had No Reason To Stay” pushes through the darkness with a fast beat. Tribal drums and a luring melody complement the EP with “Horoom Reclusion” in a remix by Georgian artist Zesknel.
All in all, BASRMX01 has you think of sweaty club nights and pumped up dancefloors. If the cast of this remix EP was a line-up, you would definitely want to show up to the party.
