I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate -5-1922

Here's a sneak peek preview of our exciting new Optical Music Recognition (OMR) project -- reviving music composed for  performances at movie theaters during the silent film ("photoplay") era.

Our first offering is a cue named "Grief", composed by John Stepan Namecnik in 1922. Cues were intended to be used with any emotionally appropriate scene, and would no doubt be played by the pit orchestra with numerous different films. Recreating it was a challenge, but I think it's a beautiful piece worthy of preservation and continued enjoyment.

Zamecnik was on staff at Fox, so I selected a promotional poster for a 1922 Fox melodrama "The Ragged Heiress" starring Shirley Mason as our cover image. (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ragged_Heiress#/media/File:The_Ragged_Heiress_(poster).jpg). Was this piece used along with this film in theaters in 1922? We don't know.

Music produced by @MLucas from vintage pit orchestra sheet music dated MCMXXII. This is a work in progress, so it's not available for download yet. We'll do that when we're sure it's ready.
