Afternoon Drive 2021-11-30 Massachusetts State Lottery Set For The Holidays!

Fitness experts Hannah and Sean Stellmach, who own and manage Fitness Together of Newburyport, visit “The Morning Show”. Host Mary Jacobsen interviews the Stellmachs about how people can motivate themselves to turn their New Year’s aspirations for getting fit into a plan, and a plan into action. Describing some of the common barriers people encounter in their efforts to exercise regularly, and methods and attitudes they’ve observed in their work as fitness coaches that help people stay the course.
The Stellmachs also talk about the critically important health benefits of regular exercise, as well as the serious hazards of inactivity. They discuss some of the latest research findings from exercise science, and how to integrate these into a fitness plan.

Morning Show With Mary Jacobsen 2022-01-06 Fitness Together

Mary Jacobsen talks with Kurt Braddock, Assistant Professor of Public Communications at American University. Braddock is the author of “Weaponized Words: the Strategic Role of Persuasion in Violent Radicalization and Counter-radicalization,” published by Cambridge University Press in 2020.
          Braddock explains “stochastic terror,” a term that is showing up with growing frequency in news and commentary in reference to political, antisemitic, or racially motivated acts of violence such as the assault on Paul Pelosi.
          Stochastic is a term related to statistics, referring to events that are likely to occur, but do so at random. As Braddock says, “think of sitting on your front porch watching dark storm clouds roll into your neighborhood. You can be pretty sure lightning is going to strike soon, but you can’t know exactly when or where.”
Stochastic terror refers to violent acts that are not directly ordered, but are almost certain to happen in response to a volume of dehumanizing and inflammatory, mass mediated rhetoric about a person or group that implicitly advocates for or justifies violence.
“When you’re reaching millions of people” with such messages, Braddock says, “you approach near certainty” that someone will respond to incendiary rhetoric with violence.
Although such indirect incitement is protected free speech, Braddock believes that public education about the strategy and hazards of stochastic terror can give us a means of “attitudinal inoculation” against calls to political violence. By discerning when inflammatory rhetoric from leaders is being used as a “political communication tool,” we can “demand greater responsibility from our elected leaders.”

Morning Show with Mary Jacobsen 2023-01-26 Kurt Braddock

In this episode of the Mayor’s Corner, Mayor Sean reports that the Parks Reorganization Plan was given the go-ahead with a 10-1 vote from the City Council on Monday night. The search for the DPS Director and Fire Chief continue. The Plum Island Dredge Project remains on hold. There is a Merrimack River Beach Alliance (MRBA) Meeting on Friday at 10am at PITA Hall. The Merrimack Valley Transit Authority, or MeVa, will be taking a demonstration ride on Monday, March 6th at 2pm to test out new routes and evaluating how well they meet the needs of riders. Plans for year 2 of the Streets & Sidewalks Plan are underway and will be considered by the City Council next week. Close to 4 miles of roadway is expected to be re-surfaced. 

As part of the Presidential Plunge, Mayor Reardon jumped into the Atlantic Ocean during Tuesday’s storm along with Nate Allard, President of the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce & Industry and 5 others, raising over $7500 for the Chamber. 

In the coming weeks, City Hall will be partnering with Newburyport Community Service (CSN) to collect toilet paper (single rolls or a 4/6 pack, nothing larger please) for residents in need. Toilet paper is one of their most requested items. There will be two bins located in the lobby from March 6 – March 31st. Residents are encouraged to stop by City Hall with donations. 

NYS is taking nominations for their Asset Builder Awards, which will take place on April 6th. Nominations are open through March 10th and the application form is here:

It's Junie B.'s first day of first grade, and a lot of things have changed for her: Junie's friend, Lucille, doesn't want to be her best pal anymore and, on the bus, Junie B. makes friends with Herb, the new kid at school. Also, Junie has trouble reading the blackboard and her teacher, Mr. Scary, thinks she may need glasses. Throw in a friendly cafeteria lady, a kickball tournament and a "Top-Secret Personal Beeswax Journal," and first grade has never been more exciting.
