For the 54th Avenue Red Podcast we welcome a truly talented, hard-working and well-respected veteran of the underground music scene - Andrew Duke from Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. Andrew is a music collector, DJ, artist, remixer, sound designer, radio/mix show host and has also been writing about music since 1981.

Andrew Duke In The Mix is his mixshow, which began way back in 1987 during the emergence of true House & Techno initially as a weekly radio show on CKDU 88.1FM Halifax NS Canada and ran through until 2004. He has continued the show independently since then to this very day on various platforms.

As a producer, Andrew had a very nice record out on Own Jay's Batti Batti imprint, which comes with a remix from XDB. Well worth tracking down a copy! In this explosive mix of raw 80's Electro/Freestyle/Hip-House, Andrew has made 7 edits especially for this smoking hot mix for Avenue Red. UKR unites the tribes with a release of epic proportions. To celebrate the 25th year anniversary of Chancellor - 'Insane', originally released on Jay Denham's  'Black Nation Records', UKR and Chancellor teamed up to curate something powerful and unique. Chancellor aka Chance McDermott has been a fixture in the Midwest funky techno scene and around the globe since the mid-nineties, releasing his raw and dynamic techno on heavy-hitting labels such as Black Nation, Missile, and Sativae. Originating from Kalamazoo Michigan, his productions take elements from both Detroit and Chicago, combining them into his own jacking, melodic and edgy warehouse tracks. A prime example of this deadly style of underground weaponry is Chancellor's 'Insane'. An anthem for the true heads, 'Insane' is a burner with its chopped-up synth line...transformed, filtered, and tweaked to jack you to another dimension. Fierce and twisted in every way, this is a legendary piece of techno artillery that has been dropped by the likes of French legend Laurent Garnier to the 'Baron of Techno' Dave Clarke, and still to this day stands the test of time. Chancellor brings pure attitude with this catchy and timelessly effective techno heater.  
To celebrate the 25th year of his epic track being released, Chancellor reached out to a select group of his respected musical peers to give their own interpretations of the original. All shades of techno are represented here including an electro mix, so there is most assuredly a version to float the boat of any techno aficionado. Showcasing the diversity, talent and influences of artists in the broad spectrums that are the Electro & Techno genres: past, present and future. Since 2012 Bass Agenda has asked artists to choose tracks important to them and has featured Interviews, guest mixes, and live sets from a diverse range of talent including Juan Atkins, Bass Junkie, Helena Hauff, The Egyptian Lover, Jensen Interceptor, Legowelt, Dave Clarke, David Meiser, Adult., Keith Tucker, Detroit In Effect, Anthony Rother, Dez Williams & more. The label has been releasing vinyl, CD, & digital formats since 2013 via Bandcamp & Triple Vision.

Raised in small-town Indiana on a musical diet of 80s synth pop and punk rock, Noncompliant soon found barnyard raves and warehouse techno parties and (as DJ Shiva) quickly became a fixture of the fabled 90s Midwest USA rave scene.

Two decades and a name change later, she is at the top of her techno game. Mixmag named her one of 2017’s Top 20 Breakthrough DJs. She owned a packed and sweaty Boiler Room during Movement Detroit, turned in mindblowing mixes for Slam Radio, Discwoman, and Resident Advisor, and quaked some of the world’s most respected dance floors like Smartbar Chicago, Amsterdam’s DeSchool, Concrete in Paris, and Berlin's legendary Berghain and Tresor clubs. Her festival appearances include Unsound, Red Bull Music Festival Paris, Movement Detroit, and Whole United Queer Festival.

As a producer, her releases and remixes on labels like Valence, Argot, Flash, and Dark Entries have pounded sound systems worldwide, with her tune “Women’s Work” landing on Fiedel’s official Berghain 08 mix and on his label Fiedeltwo.

At her core, she is a die-hard techno fan with a deep love for music and a drive to continue honing her craft as a DJ and producer to share her favorite music with people on dance floors everywhere.

Founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah, Barely Breaking Even (BBE Music) started life as a London club night, taking its name from the eponymous Disco record by the Universal Robot Band.

The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales.

A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks.

A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am's first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players.

A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Morales among many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles.

The label’s most recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari’ in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz’ Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of 'Barely Breaking Even', featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega.

In 2021 BBE Music is celebrating its 25th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the label is offering up some special projects, from the 20th Anniversary edition of J Dilla’s ‘Welcome 2 Detroit’, through David Bowie tribute album ‘Modern Love’, to a special new ‘Worldwide’ compilation from old friend Gilles Peterson. BBE Music will also be looking to the future with more exciting original artist projects, plus merch collaborations events and more...
