Affirmations (I Love Myself, I Love My Skin)

Die Schriftstellerin, Aktivistin und Philosophin Angela Davis wurde in den 1970er Jahren zur Ikone der Black-Power-Bewegung. Heute zählt sie zu den wichtigsten Vertreter*innen des Abolitionismus – eine Bewegung, die sich für die Überwindung staatlicher Gewaltinstitutionen einsetzt, wie sie etwa in Form von Gefängnissen oder der Polizei bestehen.

In „Are Prisons obsolete?“ (2003), dt. „Eine Gesellschaft ohne Gefängnisse?“, argumentiert Davis, dass das Gefängnis weder natürlich noch notwendig sei, sondern das Produkt einer rassistischen, klassenbasierten und patriarchalen Gesellschaft. Sie prägt den Begriff des industriellen Gefängniskomplex („Prison Industrial Complex“), um die Komplizenschaft des Gefängniswesens mit dem kapitalistischen Ausbeutungs- und Herrschaftssystem zu beschreiben.

Wie anderen Abolitionist*innen geht es Davis nicht nur um die langfristige Abschaffung von Gefängnissen, sondern um eine radikale Transformation der kapitalistischen Lebensbedingungen, die Armut und Kriminalität systematisch reproduzieren. Ebenso wichtig ist daher der Aufbau von „Caring Communitys“ und Infrastrukturen zur Prävention von Armut, Kriminalität und Gewalt.
