CONVERSATIONS ALONG THE CAMINO | OMNIBUS

In May 2023, ATLANTIC FELLOWS from several equity-focussed programs around the world, joined the WALKING THE TALK FOR DEMENTIA along the Camino in Spain, ending in SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA. They were able to do so because of grants awarded by the ATLANTIC INSTITUTE in Oxford which supports Fellows from the seven global Atlantic programs to connect and collaborate for change.

WALKING THE TALK FOR DEMENTIA was the brainchild of three people, including two Fellows for Equity in Brain Health, Fernando AGUZZOLI-PERES from Brazil and Clara DOMINGUEZ from Santiago de Compostela. They, along with Brazilian Gustavo SAN MARTIN, wanted to organise a conference with a difference where, over four days, people living with dementia, practitioners, researchers, caregivers and Atlantic Fellows walked and talked together to better understand each other’s experiences so that collectively they could create change.

The ATLANTIC INSTITUTE is based in Oxford, England and works to promote connection and collaboration among Fellows from the seven Atlantic equity-focused programmes around the world in the pursuit of fairer, healthier, more inclusive societies.

Welcome back to WALKING THE TALK FOR DEMENTIA.

In 2023, ATLANTIC FELLOWS (https://www.atlanticfellows.org/) joined people living with dementia, practitioners, researchers and caregivers in SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain, for a walk along the Camino followed by a symposium.  This was a conference with a difference.  Over the course of a week, participants walked and talked together to better understand each other’s experiences so that collectively they could create change. Living with a Dementia Diagnosis | BLawlor, LWaters & BHoltzhausen

In this episode of the Dementia Researcher podcast, Dr Sam Moxon interviews Dr Michael Klaper discussing the impact of diet and nutrition on brain health and dementia.

They explore the importance of a plant-based diet, rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients, for maintaining brain health. They also discuss the negative effects of ultra processed foods and animal-based diets on brain health. Dr. Klaper emphasises the importance of sleep, exercise, and stress management for overall brain health. He also suggests practical tips for transitioning to a plant-based diet, such as incorporating more vegetables and legumes into meals and exploring international cuisines.

About the guest:

Dr Klaper graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1972. He served a medical internship at Vancouver General Hospital in British Columbia, received training in surgery, anesthesiology & orthopedics at the University of British Columbia Hospital in Vancouver & trained in obstetrics at the University of California Hospital in San Francisco.

Dr Klaper is a clinician, internationally-recognised teacher & speaker on diet & health. In addition to his clinical practice & private consultations with patients, he's a passionate & devoted educator of physicians & other healthcare professionals about the importance of nutrition in clinical practice & integrative medicine. 

He's also the author of Vegan Nutrition; Pure & Simple & has produced numerous videos, webinars & dozens of articles for both scientific journals & the popular press. As a source of inspiration advocating plant-based diets & the end of animal cruelty worldwide, Dr Klaper contributed to the making of 2 PBS television programs, Food for Thought & the award-winning movie, Diet for a New America. He teaches that “Health Comes From Healthy Living” & is dedicated to the healing & flourishing of all living beings & our planet.

He is also a consultant for NASA advising the interplanetary missions on nutrician.

Melodies As Medicine: The Power Of Music

Proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs, are a class of popular drugs that reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. They are often the first-line treatment for conditions related to acid, such as esophagitis, non-erosive reflux disease, and peptic ulcer disease.

We talk about PPIs and dementia with Misha Kogan, MD, ABIOM, RCST, medical director of the GW Center of Integrative Medicine and associate professor of Medicine here at GW. Studies show that people who take proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for more than four years and are 45 or older have a 33% higher risk of developing dementia than those who have never taken PPIs.

An expert on neurodegenerative diseases, Dr. Kogan completed the Geriatric Fellowship at GW.  He is the chief editor of the first definitive textbook on Integrative Medicine and aging, “Integrative Geriatric Medicine,” part of Andrew Weil Integrative Medicine Library series. 

Dr. Kogan is also on the faculty of the GW Institute for Brain Health and Dementias; associate director of the Geriatrics Fellowship Program at GW; and founder and director othe George Washington University Integrative Geriatrics Fellowship Track.

The Epigenetic Equation

CHUCK FEENEY, the billionaire philanthropist who gave his fortune away during his lifetime died a year ago, at the age of 92 on October 9, 2023. One of the last big bets of the donor organisation he founded, ATLANTIC PHILANTHROPIES, was to create seven global ATLANTIC FELLOWS programs, each committed to the eradication of inequities.

One of those programs, the ATLANTIC FELLOWS FOR EQUITY IN BRAIN HEALTH program is housed in the GLOBAL BRAIN HEALTH INSTITUTE at two sites, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SAN FRANCISCO and TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN. BRIAN LAWLOR is currently Site Director of the Trinity program and in reflecting on the late CHUCK FEENEY’s contribution, he begins by describing the impact Chuck had on the Irish city of Limerick where Brian grew up.
