In this podcast for Functional Ecology, Assistant Editor, Frank Harris, sits down with Anna Stöckl—a Group Leader at Konstanz University, Germany—to discuss her recently published paper: Flower patterns improve foraging efficiency in bumblebees by guiding approach flight and landing

Anna’s paper shows that flower patterns reduced flower handling time by up to 30%, without a reduction in nectar discovery time. Instead, the patterns were involved in guiding approach flight, landing and departure decisions. Anna et al. revealed these effects on flower-experienced foragers. Since these represent the majority of active pollinators, the nectary-independent impact of flower patterns must be considered fundamental to plant–pollinator interactions under natural conditions.

This Week in Water for April 21, 2024

Following on from native plant week, this week we revisit a BEST OF conversation about some of our favorite native plant visitors: our native bumble bees. Bumble bee conservation has recently had some good news: the Xerces Society recently kicked off their newest Bumble Bee Atlas project, this time in the US Midwest. 

With that in mind, please enjoy our conversation from 2023 with Leif Richardson, Conservation Biologist with the Xerces Society, sharing so much about conservation, about bumble bees, about the nation-wide Bumble Bee Atlas projects generally, and his spearheading of the California Bumble Bee Atlas.

The hypnotic drone of bumblebees “drinking” under an ancient beech tree, near Arney bridge in County Fermanagh. A good friend and neighbour mentioned they heard a huge hum on their dog walk down this lane. By the time the recordings were made (around two weeks later) the drone had considerably faded, so you can imagine the numbers of bees and the size of this beautiful tree.

Initially, we were unclear as to why the bees were attracted to this particular tree. Research suggests that bees are attracted to honeydew*, which is the sugary substance secreted by aphids when feeding on tree sap.

This track is a composite of the field recordings and processing to extract and subsequently adding the fundamental frequency of the droning.
