Walas `Namugwis (links) , auch bekannt als Chief David Mungo Knox, ist Hereditary Chief der indigenen Kwakwaka’wakw Nation in T’asix’s, das auch den kolonialen Namen Fort Rupert, British Columbia trägt. Das Territorium der Kwakwaka’wakw befindet sich im Norden Vancouver Islands und ist geprägt vom Ozean, unzähligen Fjorden und Inseln, und dem uralten Küstenregenwald, in dem mehr als tausend Jahre alte Bäume wachsen.

Hereditary Chiefs werden durch Erbfolge bestimmt und haben gemäß der traditionellen Rechts- und Regierungsstrukturen ihrer Nationen, die Aufgabe, für die Menschen ihres Territoriums zu sorgen und das Land für nachfolgende Generationen zu bewahren.

Im Dezember letzten Jahres nahm Chief David Mungo Knox an der 15. UN-Biodiversitätskonferenz (COP-15) in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal teil, wo er sich mit Regierungs- und Wirtschaftsvertreter*innen aus der ganzen Welt traf, um auf die Notwendigkeit des Schutzes der biologischen Vielfalt aufmerksam zu machen. Auch nutzte er das Treffen um sich mit anderen indigenen Vertreter*innen auszutauschen und zu vernetzen.

Im Interview mit dem südnordfunk beschreibt er eindrücklich die Geschichte und das Gebiet der Kwakwaka’wakw und was der anhaltende Kolonialismus im sogenannten Kanada für die indigenen Nationen an der Westküste bedeutet. Außerdem beschreibt er seinen Einsatz gegen die Abholzung der letzten Stücke intakten Urwalds und was er bei der COP-15 erlebt hat.

Der Schutz der Biologischen Vielfalt ist eine Versicherung gegen den Klimawandel. Darin sind sich die UN-Mitgliedstaaten einig. Wenig Einigkeit hingegen herrschte im Dezember 2022, als das Rahmenabkommen über Biodiversität verhandelt wurde. Wie und mit welchen konkreten politischen Strategien können Ökosysteme und Artenvielfalt erhalten werden? Die einen treibt vor allem die Sorge um die Existenzgrundlage der Wirtschaft um. Die anderen die Sorge der Menschen, die am Wohlstand wenig partizipieren und auf den Zugang zu intakten Ökosystemen angewiesen sind. Diese Interessenskonflikte gipfeln auch in einer widersprüchlichen Debatte darüber, ob die Natur Preisschilder braucht.

In this episode, I bring you behind the walls of the Palais des Congrès in Tio'tià:ke (Montréal) where the 15th Conference of the Parties #COP15 of the Convention on Biological Diversity took place. 

For two weeks, representatives from civil society, business, finance and politicians from 196 countries gathered to agree on a global biodiversity framework: a strategic plan to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.

In this special episode* I bring together recordings from the Athabasca river with voices from Indigenous land & water protectors and members of the Canadian organisation 'Keepers of the Water'. After decades of extracting bitumen (a form of crude oil) in Northern Alberta, the toxic wastewater from the mining activities is starting to become a problem... 

But the federal and provincial governments of Canada, together with industry, have a solution: they want to change domestic law to legalize the release of the tailings ponds (the residual wastewater from the mining operations) into the Athabasca river. 

This river directly feeds into the Mackenzie River Basin, which is known as the Amazon of the North: the largest watershed in Canada and the most intact large scale ecosystem on the continent.
