A reunião do G20, no Rio de Janeiro, nos últimos dias 18 e 19 de novembro de 2024, encerrou-se com sinalizações positivas para o enfrentamento à crise climática e o reconhecimento da necessidade de aumentar o financiamento dos países em desenvolvimento para enfrentar a questão. Enquanto isso, na COP 29 (Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre Mudanças Climáticas), em Baku, no Azerbaijão, que terminou nesse domingo, 24, as negociações foram complicadas, inclusive estendendo o encontro para além do planejado. Pela programação, o último dia seria a sexta-feira, mas foram necessários mais dois de discussões. 

O financiamento climático dos países desenvolvidos para os em desenvolvimento era a principal questão dessa COP, como afirmou a ministra do Meio Ambiente e Mudança do Clima do Brasil, Marina Silva. Apesar de o valor de 300 bilhões de dólares por ano, até 2035, marcar um acordo histórico, os países em desenvolvimento não ficaram satisfeitos. As nações mais impactadas por eventos climáticos extremos defendiam a meta de 1,3 trilhão anuais, e consideraram a decisão um insulto. O objetivo é promover ações para limitar o aumento da temperatura global a 1,5 graus Celsius. A COP é uma convenção anual criada pela ONU em 1994 para prevenir as intervenções humanas perigosas ao sistema climático mundial. Já o G20, criado em 1999, é um fórum de cooperação econômica internacional que visa ao debate de propostas em busca do fortalecimento da economia e do desenvolvimento social global. 

A volta de Donald Trump à presidência dos Estados Unidos em 2025 é um grande fator de preocupação. Conhecido por desvalorizar a agenda ambiental, ele prometeu retirar o país do Acordo de Paris. A Argentina, tradicionalmente uma voz importante na América Latina pela pauta ambiental, abandonou o encontro antes do fim. O presidente Javier Milei, de extrema direita, também tem um discurso crítico ao que chama de “agenda ideológica” da ONU. A China, maior emissor de carbono do mundo, não teve atuação de destaque. O país é definido pelas Nações Unidas como "em desenvolvimento", o que significa que não tem obrigação formal de cortar as emissões de gases de efeito estufa ou fornecer ajuda financeira aos países mais pobres. Em 2025, o Brasil vai sediar a COP 30, em Belém, com grandes responsabilidades.

Climate change, human rights, and modern slavery with Chiara and Sizakelle

As COP29, United Nations annual conference to discuss climate policies, winds down, Daren Coughron, Legislative Manager at the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) and attendee at the conference, talks about some of the discussions and agreements that came out of the meeting. FCNL is also pushing Congress to vote on the "Farm Bill" which will help farmers integrate ecologically sound farm practices.

At the recent COP29 climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, China was seen as having played a part in getting an agreement — albeit a much criticised one — to increase funding to mitigate the climate crisis. And with Donald Trump threatening to pull the U.S, out of climate change mechanisms, Beijing’s role could become even more important. But China, now the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, continues to reject calls for it to be given developed nation status, which would require it to make increased financial contributions to tackle climate change. Journalist Isabel Hilton, founder of China Dialogue, discuses China's role in the climate talks, and its domestic environmental problems, with presenter Duncan Hewitt.

Ep182: China and the Climate Crisis — Good COP, Bad COP?

AfricaNow! December 4, 2024 COP29—Climate Justice Shortchanged

Topic and Guest: Today AfricaNow! is following up from our show of three weeks ago during first days of the UN Climate Change Conference began in Baku, Azerbaijan.  The conference was scheduled from November 11 until November 22, 2024, and it was the 29th annual meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the 1992 UN climate agreement (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change [UNFCCC]). The agreement was put into force in 1994—30 years ago this year.  

COP29 conference ended a day later than scheduled.  At end the Global North pledged to provide $300billion to the Global South in assisting it to move to a low carbon economy and adapt its infrastructure to handle the impacts of extreme weather.  The Global South had demanded at least $1 trillion.  Thus, members of the Global South walked out of the negotiation rooms.   Representatives from the Global South were quoted in the Guardian newspaper saying: “[We are] outraged and deeply hurt by the outcome of COP29. Once again, the countries most responsible for the climate crisis have failed us. This is not just a failure. Yesterday I had a conversation with Dakar-based activist Muhammed Lamin Saidykhan, Head of Building Power Department at the Climate Action Network (CAN) International.   Muhammed Lamin Saidykhan who attended the climate conference in Baku.  The conversation dissects the outcomes of COP29: the continuous unmet pledges by the Global North (countries heavily responsible for the climate change); unmet demands of climate justice for countries most impacted by climate change; fossil fuel industry’s negative impact; next steps and more.

AfricaNow! Dec. 4, 2024 COP29--Climate Justice Shortchanged

In this episode, we’re hearing David Nicholson of Mercy Corps and Thomas Beloe from the UNDP talk human centred climate action. David Nicholson is the first-ever Chief Climate Officer at Mercy Corps. David joins us from the climate COP29 in Baku to share where he thinks business and human centred climate action have gotten to. Whilst Thomas Beloe, the Acting Director, Sustainable Finance Hub, UNDP records his piece shortly after the climate COP is finished and shares his thoughts on how climate action needs to move forward for everyone.

Both provide insider views on what it was like at the climate COP in Baku, how we can take action, and the role business and others can play in helping tackle climate change.

Whilst Thomas has more than 25 years of experience in providing policy advice to governments across Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Pacific. Tom Beloe leads UNDP’s Sustainable Finance Hub. In addition to global and regional roles on sustainable finance, Tom has also worked on governance, climate finance and responsible business practices. Previous to UNDP, Tom worked for think tanks, NGOs and the UK government’s Department for International Development (DFID). He has a master’s degree in Anthropology from Cambridge University and a Master’s in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics.
