We also talked about being a hired gun, but learning to take time for yourself and make your own music. The conversation touches a lot on the 2011 documentary, "Hit So Hard," which centers around Hole's drummer Patty Schemel and the band surrounding the recording and fallout in her personal life. I can't stress how much you should watch the doc if you can get your hands on it. 

Kayleigh released her debut solo album, "Learning to Be Yourself," last year on Memory Music. You can pick it up directly from her on vinyl or check it out on streaming.

About four years ago, I got really ticked off (and snobby) when I heard a singer singing on YouTube.

I remember I was in my basement at the time. I was standing by my computer, and I said to God, "Lord, if you give me a singing voice, I'll sing for you, because nobody else does. You bless all of these people out here today, and nobody hardly does anything for you "

I was jealous, and I was being a total jerk about it, but I meant it.

But it wasn't until a year later that I realized God had blessed my voice.

I had long forgotten about my prayer to Him, and never expected Him to answer it. 

But He did.

I started singing in my room one night... and I realized I could sing. I mean, I could hit high notes I could never hit before.

I was shocked...

... I said, "Did God change my voice?"

He later confirmed He did through the Holy Spirit. 

He said, "I did, but you need to work on it a little bit."

He convincted me that He would teach me how to sing, and then take me the rest of the way.

He also later told me that He answered my prayer because I had obeyed Him long before that. 

I had stopped sinning in every area He had commanded me to stop sinning in.

I gave up my sexual sins (masturbating, some porn, and word porn [naughty romance novels]), among other sins.

It took a year and a half to stop masturbating. And believe me, it wasn't my worse sin. 

Gluttony was. I liked food more.

A lot more.

It took me four years to overcome (and recover from) my food addiction with the Lord.

It was one of the most agonizing things I'd ever gone through.

I battled wrath--vehement rage toward God, and often cursed Him out during stages of withdrawal.

It was during the time I prayed to be able to sing that He was healing me from my food addiction...

... And at that point He decided to bless me due to the hard work I'd done by obeying Him in all the other areas of my life.

And so, once I was blessed with that amazing singing voice, it took several years after that before things actually took off.

Throughout those years, I went through a lot of agony. He allowed a lot of pain to come into my life, and used it to transform me...

... And my voice.

⛈️ He got rid of the...

• Pride 
• Greed
• Sloth

.

... And jealousy. 

.

And like I said, the lust and gluttony as well.

Then, He taught me how to sing and perform.

But, of course, I'm still learning. Because there's always more to learn.

When you listen to my music--as you listen--I think you'll hear God speaking through it.

He taught me to put my entire soul into every song.

During all of those agonizing days I had in the past, He used song to save me.

But doesn't God always do that, if you let Him?

He has a way with saving.
