Am 28. Mai 2021 startet die Disney-Produktion "Cruella" per VIP-Zugang auf Disney+. Zudem wird die Vorgeschichte der Widersacherin aus "101 Dalmatiner" in ausgewählten Kinos zu sehen sein, sofern möglich.

Susan und Steve konnten den Realfilm vorab sehen und schildern nun im Podcast ihre Eindrücke von Handlung, Machart und den Schauspielerinnen Emma Stone und Emma Thompson.

Die Kurzbesprechung des vermeintlichen Prequels erfolgt größtenteils spoilerfrei und ist angereichert mit Interview-Ausschnitten der Hauptdarstellerinnen und des Regisseurs Craig Gillespie.

The film explores an alternative take on the classic villain Cruella de Vil from the 1961 classic, 'One Hundred and One Dalmations.' Like 'Maleficent' before it, 'Cruella' revels in the undeniable fascination that this eponymous character instills in viewers, having been prominently featured in several films and shows since the 1961 original and of course immortalized in the hit song bearing her name. This origin story is set in 1970s London and follows "Estella" (Emma Stone) as she goes from petty street thief to major player in the fashion world, rivaling her unwitting boss (Emma Thompson), against whom she holds a secret vendetta. What started as a boon to the struggling Estella's career turns into a perilous game of chess between the iconoclastic duo. Cruella

Disney's latest update of its back catalogue sees Emma Stone bring punk rock to Sixties London in Cruella, a beautiful, stylish, but clunky affair. Like Maleficent before it, Cruella offers an origin story to a key Disney villain: Estella, as she's named when we meet her, takes a circuitous route to her destiny as a star fashion designer, grifting with friends to make ends meet, and waging war on the leading fashionista of the day, Baroness von Hellman - played by a fabulously wicked Emma Thompson. Oh, and there are some Dalmatians involved.

We discuss the quality and intentions of Cruella's characterisation and Stone's performance, the conspicuously expensive soundtrack, the use of CGI animals, whether the film is as queer as some of the hype has suggested, the role of men and masculinity, and why it is that fashion movies are one of very few areas in cinema where women get to play fun villains like the Baroness. Cruella is an imperfect film, less than the sum of its parts - but at their best, those parts are worth it for their own sake.
