The City of Dis (2014) A Dreamscape for Violin and Trombone Quartet

The “City of Dis" is a region of hell as depicted by Dante in Cantos VIII-XXXIV of Inferno. However—and although the structure of the work is admittedly modelled after Dante—my intention was not to “depict” the medieval images of Inferno, but rather to approach the City of Dis at second hand; in other words, to portray it as if one had had a strange dream about it just last night. Furthermore, the dream is of a modern city; where menacing cars honk as they pass by; where one is confronted by snarling pit bulls, burning piles of trash, and vicious gangs of teenagers; where the summer heat stultifies, where police horses rear up in anger; where the hapless and destitute wander in filthy anonymity. At first the dreamer stands on the edge of the fiery town, but then falls, level by level, deeper into the gloom, at last to plunge into the abyss at the bottom. The work is divided into five continuous parts: Periphery—1st Vortex—2nd Vortex—3rd Vortex—Abyss.

In Canto XXVI of the Inferno, Dante and Virgil meet the shades of the Greek heroes Ulysses and Diomedes, who are both enveloped in a single unquenchable flame. On a command from Virgil, Ulysses recounts the story of his last voyage, in which he and his crew first sailed westward from Italy, beyond the Pillars of Hercules, and out into the South Atlantic (virtually unknown at the time). From there they sailed southward to the bottom of the world, where, coming at last in sight of the vast mountain of Purgatory, their ship was swallowed up in a great upheaval of the sea. (Dante leaves it in no doubt that their hubris in voyaging to forbidden lands is the cause of their demise.)

As any reader of the Homeric epics knows—and it should be recalled that Homer’s works were unknown to Western Europe in Dante’s time—this tale of Ulysses’ last voyage is not mentioned in the ancient poems; neither does it seem to have been a part of any legendary tradition of the Trojan War or its aftermath. It appears that Dante made up the story out of whole cloth, and an astonishing story it is: an early fourteenth-century “science fiction” tale conceived nearly two centuries before the navigators of the Age of Exploration began to open up Atlantic travel.

Having made the decision to attempt a setting of Dante’s original Italian, I thought that the form of the seventeenth-century Italian solo cantata would make an admirable vehicle. Also, I was intrigued by the idea of drawing a line of continuity between Italian art forms separated by three centuries. A typical version of the solo cantata was for voice paired with an “obbligato” solo instrument supported by continuo accompaniment; my choice of bass-baritone, horn, and piano for L’ultimo viaggio di Ulyss reflects this tradition. Additionally, I retained the usual subdivisions of the form into alternations of recitative and arioso.

A confession: in a few spots I took the liberty of repeating words or phrases for dramatic emphasis. For this offense I ask the pardon of all lovers of Dante’s imperishable poem.

This is a loop I wrote for an xbox 360/ps3 game called Dante's Inferno for a game scoring class I took last fall. The game takes place in hell. It is quite violent and this particular level was quite disturbing. The music was meant to convey this sense of doom. ENJOY!

Here Cerberus devourers' the sinners trapped in the icy mud by ripping them apart over and over again for eternity.

IN Greek Myology Cerberus is the three headed Hell Hound Guardian of the Underworld making sure no one can escape Hades. Dante Took this directly from Greek Mythology,

This is the First Song off my concept Album of Dante's Inferno.
In the very first Canto of the Inferno, before Dante even descends into Hell he is lost in a dark forest and he is being staked by a jaguar. As the cat closes in he meets The Roman Poet Virgil who lived at the time of Caesar Augustus and wrote the epic Poem the Aeneid.  Virgil is a shade, since he lived before the time of Christ Dante the author  reasons that he doesn't have proper faith to enter heaven so he resides in the first layer of the Inferno Limbo. Which there is no Torment but there is lack of light. Here Dante meets all the stoics of the past who never did wrong but didn't have the proper faith to enter heaven. Here He meets Homer and Plato and many others who are wondering around with nowhere to go so they argue and debate and try and talk over each other.
Virgil is tasked with guiding Dante through the infernal.

Dante now finds himself in the Eighth Circle, called Malebolge ("Evil ditches"): the upper half of the Hell of the Fraudulent and Malicious. The Eighth Circle is a large funnel of stone shaped like an amphitheatre around which run a series of ten deep, narrow, concentric ditches or trenches called bolge (singular: bolgia). Within these ditches are punished those guilty of Simple Fraud. From the foot of the Great Cliff to the Well (which forms the neck of the funnel) are large spurs of rock, like umbrella ribs or spokes, which serve as bridges over the ten ditches. Dorothy L. Sayers writes that the Malebolge is "the image of the City in corruption: the progressive disintegration of every social relationship, personal and public. Sexuality, ecclesiastical and civil office, language, ownership, counsel, authority, psychic influence, and material interdependence – all the media of the community's interchange are perverted and falsified".
