A STORY FOR HALLOWEEN..
At almost 12 minutes long this is a mini magnum opus
but still worth a wee listen.

We have a funny way of speaking if you are from Northern Ireland.
As I am northern Irish I grew up hearing the voices of my relatives
many of whom were from the country, especially North Antrim.

Although I grew up in Belfest I had a lot of contact with my mother’s familythe Fergusons, which educated my ear.  So I am a product of this experience.Enriched by the flow, sound and rhythms of this “rare way of talkin’ “.

A poem and song.

I’m building this boat cause it’s raining.
I’m building this boat cause i’m mad.
At least that’s what they’d love to call me
It’s the best job that i’ve ever had.

I’m working with friends and relations.
All nations are working down here.
It’s the strangest old boatyard that you’ve ever seen
For the boats we are building
Are so bloody weird.

There’s many a colour around me.
There’s many a language i’ve heard.
They hammer and bang, they saw and they weld
But there’s nothing they make that’s absurd.
For no one is grabbing for money.
No one is grabbing for power.
For the boats we are building are so strange and new
Have you seen the time it’s nearly the hour?

And no one’s a slave in this boatyard
For no one is purchasing fear.
Protection can run for the shadows.
We’ve a new manifesto this year.
All women and men are equal.
All islanders under one sun.
For the S.S. Sectarian broke on these rocks
And their crew, well their race
Is so nearly run.
I’m building this boat cause it’s raining.
I’m building this boat cause i’m mad.
At least that’s what they’d love to call me.

Here is a new recording of my song
ONE HAND AND THE WHALE.

For many years I worked as a storyteller in, mainly, primary schools.
This involved telling stories, using my own poems and drawings
plus live drawing sessions with a big story at the end, using my own 
projected illustrations.

Many of these sessions, in the north, Donegal and around Ireland
were great craic and it was a two way positive experience to see the children engaged, swimming in the rhythms and the music.

All this 17+ years experience led me back into the music with more writing and performing here and there, first with the Moon Shed and then solo.

The musicians who have performed with me on this track are Nick Scott, Belfast, on Bass
Liam Bradley, Derry, on Percussion, Mick Parker, Portsmouth on keys and Damien McGeehan, Killybegs, Donegal, on Fiddle. Ironically all places with a connection to the sea. Tim Edey also played Guitars and Melodeon which added an extra sparkle.

_10 ONE HAND AND THE WHALE by Randall Stephen Hall

If you had said to me in 2009 that I would become more involved in song writing and playing music live, I would have said "Catch yourself on . . ." But here I am, five years later, still at it, after a lay off of about thirty years or so.

I could almost be described as an unintentional musician. One thing just led to another . . .

I still work as an illustrator, poet and storyteller.

Can you call that work?

Good question . . .
