As both gentlemen prepare themselves to once again face the harsh reality and the numbing stupidity of everyday life, one league of the journey remains. The flight home offers a chance to reflect on all things beautiful as well as all things ugly, without judgment. Almost strictly by the essence of its purpose, it purports new mental paths towards the future. While enjoying the astonishing view combined with the pleasant neurological effects of low cabin pressure and gravity, a final memory will be put into place which will act as a new foundation for thoughts and emotions yet to be experienced.

Summer Break

Thin Air

Three friends decided to spend their summer vacation in the rainforests of South America, enjoying the hikes in its virgin forests. While being overwhelmed by the pure untouched beauty of the scenery, the urge arose to musically illustrate and record their impressions of its fauna and flora. They proceeded to play this song in the middle of the forest on a blanket of leaves on a flute, a keyboard and an electric bass, which they had brought along just in case. The music was accompanied by the ambience of the forest: its heavy rain, wind and animal noises.

Julian’s on the rhodes, while Leisure plays the bass like a crippled racehorse, and with his soothing voice Tommy provides the crowd with the ins and outs of the modern music industry, on a serious note. No better way to spend one's leisure time than by making music, we say!

Any serious trip to the Americas starts at Leisure & Julian’s man Pete. Pete has a small piece of land which includes a house adjoining a small lake which is referred to as Pete’s Pool. The remote location and soothing atmosphere breed the perfect circumstances for the mind to wander off and come to conclusions and insights unreachable by regular normal folk. While Pete is having a swim and the kids are grilling marshmallows, Leisure & Julian decide to unpack their instruments and have a go at an emotional union with mother earth.

You always have to start somewhere, and a lot of times it might not seem the most appropriate of times and places to do so. Life has the awkward way of forcing someone forward though, swelling up through everything that is holding you back, before bursting into a crazy mess of new experiences and possibilities. The intolerable hangover from a serious party the day before might for example be the perfect mind state to commence on a summer break with an uncertain ending. Things to come are uncertain but beautiful, and anything could happen. Might as well!

Mighty Swell

As the first day of vacation looms, there seems to be only one way to exit the cages one has built around his mind in order to keep it functioning in the sociological swamps of modern society: a serious party. As the alcohol starts to flow with an increasing rate, so does the volatility of the partygoers mindstate. The deepest of conversations as well as the brightest of moods can all of a sudden flip towards their complete opposites. As the brain tries to process these inner and outer experiences to the best of its abilities, the body manages to chemically digest and break them down into their basic components, separating the wheat from the chaff, thereby readying itself for the craved change of scenery.

Humanworkshop is a loose collective of electronic music producers and audio professionals.

We are a label, manufacturing and releasing CD and vinyl albums alongside offering free MP3 downloads of exclusive tunes and DJ/live recordings. We are an audio services company, producing content for any conceivable form of online and offline media. And we are a blog and e-zine, writing and publishing articles related to audio production, music composition and new media.

As a music collective and netlabel, we aim to cover a wide area of electronica and beats genres without being part of any particular scene. We are not a dubstep label, not drum and bass collective; rather we like to look at ourselves as a group that combines virtually any modern style with more authentic and traditional music. We are interested in music that merges contemporary production with samples and recordings of 'real-world', physical instruments.

As an audio services company, we like to think we are a versatile bunch of professionals, able of producing sound design and music tailor-made to the wishes of our clients. We have worked for big and small clients alike, ranging from the BBC, Nike to non-profit, government funded projects.

Humanworkshop was established in 2000 by Daan Hendriks, Gerrit Elbrink and Remus Ockels, then first year Audio Design students at the HKU in Hilversum. In 2009, we merged with netlabel and e-zine Fant00m in a move to expand our range and offer more quality content. As a result of this merger, Durk Kooistra entered the core team of Humanworkshop.
