Summer VGM Challenge Day 5 - Mixed Ice

It's always been hard to classify GoGo Penguin — and they're fine with that.

With some calling them "the Radiohead of British jazz," the trio have placed themselves at the blurry nexus of classical, jazz, rock, electronic and experimental music.

The band's second album v2.0 was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize in 2014, and the next year they signed with Blue Note and released two albums with the prestigious jazz imprint in 2016 and 2018. 

Now, the band is ready to share their self-titled fifth album. With it, we're hearing a version of GoGo Penguin that's more emboldened than ever, as the band continues to find new ways to express their collaborative creativity and push the limits of their music. 

Pianist Chris Illingworth joined us for a conversation about that record, and how they gained the confidence to make it.

Music Producer, Remixer, Soundtrack Composer and occasional bad DJ I have been producing music ranging from Ambient, Trip Hop, Soul, Hip Hop, Funk, House and Techno for over 15 years now. I am also currently producing music for film and doing sound design.

Immortal Onion was formed in 2016. Having won the „Jazz phonographic debut” competition, the group released their first album (“Ocelot of Salvation”) in July 2017. Since then, they have performed in 11 countries at numerous international festivals and venues. In 2019, the trio recorded and self released their live album from Sopot, Poland (YouTube).

At the beginning of this year, the group signed to U Know Me Records and released their second studio album called “XD [Experience Design]” in March. Immortal Onion offers a bold combination of many seemingly remote styles jazz, minimalism as well as fusion, electronic music and even progressive metal.
