In an effort to immerse himself in the music of Sliabh Luachra producer Paul McDermott goes on a quest to track down six Irish trad vinyl records released in 1977. He is assisted by Eoin Stan O’Sullivan, Sliabh Luachra musician in residence. Together they travel to Cork and Kerry visiting villages and townlands surrounding the River Blackwater trying to describe the magic of this music and its origins in the “rushy mountain”. Along the way we hear stories of the Sliabh Luachra masters and meet musicians young and old. As the quest climaxes, the realisation dawns that the producer’s embrace of this tradition’s past is only matched by O’Sullivan’s compulsion to safeguard its future.

A bouncy reel from P. J. McNamara on piccolo, recorded in 1926. The tune was recorded as Tinker's Stick by Matt Molloy on his Stony Steps album, but it's also known as The New Policeman and The Twin Brothers amongst others.

The speed and pitch of this recording has been adjusted to 76rpm based on Alan Morrisroe’s research about Victor recordings of this time period.

Jim McKenna is a multi-instrumentalist & composer.  Members of Jim's family, Daniel McKenna and Ann Callahan, had emigrated to Boston during the Irish Famine (An Gorta Mór) in 1850 (Armagh) and 1852 (Cork) respectively.  Daniel McKenna and Ann Callahan were married in Boston (Charlestown) on October 1, 1854.  Daniel and his brother Neil were two of the five founding members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Boston (American Society of Hibernians) on March 17, 1857 (Incorporated March 27, 1861).  This organization was formed "for the purpose of rendering assistance to the sick and disabled members of their society, and also of providing for the decent burial of the dead".  Jim's great great uncle from Drumkeeran Ireland, Thomas McPartlin, performed traditional music on the banjo in Boston during the late 1800's.  Jim great great aunt, from County Cork, Bridget married Callahan Daniel Murphy in Boston Nov 5, 1876 at Holy Cross Cathedral, Boston.

Jacknife talks about working with U2, REM, Snow Patrol and recording as Telefís with the late Cathal Coughlan. We start in the Cabra Grand cinema at a Siouxsie and the Banshees gig in 1980 and we work our way up to the present day - it's the longest episode to date, it's a history lesson. Who am I.
I grew up back in the 80's in Ballymun Dublin. My first rave was the mansion house in the 90's. before this I was a rocker listening to 80's rock music. I left the mansion house humming 2 songs then headed for Abbey Discs on Abbey Street at about 4am Queuing until it opened (weirdo). You would think it was the Christmas sales or I was queuing for the new years free holiday in Budget Travel. The 2 songs I heard that night was Rozalla-Everybody's free and 2 Unlimited Get ready for this. I had purchased my first vinyl records without a turntable, I had a tape deck by no record player. I continued to rave and buy vinyl without a turntable for 1 year until I purchased a second hand vintage player with mixer (No technics,the cheapest available). I continued to rave in Sides DC when I was at college in Cathal Brugha street. I went to Jersey in 1993 where I looked for a job in Raffles nightclub as a DJ, the only mixing I could do was flour, butter and eggs for pastry. I was way out of my depth so I tanked on my first night and many nights after. I continued to work in Raffles 6 nights per week between the lights and the decks learning each night. I moved back to Ireland where I settled in Ennis Where my DJing took off. I landed the big night in the queens hotel nightclub then Central park nightclub. Working 50-60 hours a week in a restaurant and 4-5 nights a week in a nightclub became life for me. I worked in the queens hotel nightclub for 20 years then I decided to stop DJing, I had enough. I couldnt do all the long hours plus the late nights so I decided to let DJing go. Over the years I purchased studio equipment to start making tunes. I learnt from both YouTube and books all about music production. After experiencing a tough run with Covid it was time to have a words with myself. If I died all my music stuff which was idle for years would be wasted. I said to myself its time to loose a few pounds, get back into music production.Enjot the tunes. That's me.
