Among East Africa's most exciting DJs and a core member of Kampala's Nyege Nyege collective, Kampire’s vibrant bass-heavy sets have transported her to bring the best of Ugandan party culture to clubs & festivals across the world.  Her Boiler Room set from Nyege Nyege festival 2018 was a legitimate ‘internet moment’, with thousands of shares on Facebook leading to serious FOMO from electronic music fans watching online. Then in the midst of a global pandemic, Kampire’s Nyege Nyege 2020 opening ceremony DJ set stood out from the deluge of home DJ broadcasts, filmed on an island in the Nile for the digital edition of the festival, broadcast by Resident Advisor.

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

In 2018, the renowned music journal Fact boldly claimed that “the world’s best electronic music festival is in Uganda.” In only a few years, Nyege Nyege has indeed become one of the hottest artistic hubs in East Africa, birthing two music labels that propelled local scenes, such as Ugandan acholitronix or Tanzanian singeli, across the globe. At the heart of this explosive universe lies a big house, known as “the Villa,” that almost constantly vibrates with sounds as musicians from the region and beyond tirelessly produce, exchange skills, and frenetically party until dawn. Despite reducing the Villa’s bubbling flow, COVID-19 didn’t silence it, and the house kept on nurturing its community of underground musicians. In this episode, producer Basile Koechlin takes us to the Villa to meet current residents and other members of the Nyege Nyege nebula. Through a patchwork of stories, soundscapes, and fresh musical releases, we hear more about this unique and strange place that came to host and generate a seminal part of the avant-garde of electronic music production in East Africa.

"I almost never stick to a single genre when I mix, gqom is the only music, with its cinematic soundscapes, that makes me want to attempt that. I'm a huge fan of South African music in general and it has had such a big impact on my style and taste that I had to include some South African tracks in the compilation 'A Dancefloor in Ndola'. I love that you can hear both the past and the future in genres like kwaito and amapiano, and gqom, of course is the perfect example of this. This set is a mix of tracks I've played on radio this year, and what I prepped for my set at Dekmantel Selectors in August. A big thanks as always to the producers who make such mind-blowing music. I hope you enjoy."
