This was a mix that I made to give out at a Mini Cooper club Christmas party.  I had just gotten a Mini, a car I wanted since 2003, and I joined the local club.

I tried to make a mix of 'Ardkore that would appeal to someone who never heard it before.  I used a lot of happy played out anthems but I also put in some weird deep cuts that only a collector would know.

Edit: I just noticed an error in the tracklist.  In between 24 and 25 there is the track, DJ Crystal "Suicidal" on Luckyspin.

This was my first attempt at building a fake rave night with tribute sets.  I heard there was this festival in europe of liquid funk drum and bass.  This seems like a terrific idea and its a shame the rave scene in the USA is dead.  Such an event would be a joy to visit.  So since the USA isn't going to get any better ever, why not make my own Liquicity Festival.

Other then Fabio and LTJ Bukem, I'm not familiar with any other DJs though in hind site, I think Jumping Jack Frost and Bryan Gee play this too.  So at the time I thought lets just make a catch all DJ that plays stuff that I certainly would not.  I was watching a lot of Jim Sterling videos on youtube where he plays bad Steam games and thought up DJ Chungus.

This one I themed after Fabio as at least I have a pretty good idea of what Fabio was playing in 2000 - 2002 because I saw him in person and I have a few mix CDs of what he was playing then too.  Ohh yeah, I made sure to pick out records that were considered "hot" at the time and made sure to have them play more then once during the "event" for realism.

This one I themed after LTJ Bukem.  I think Bukem is more well known for atmospheric jungle but as the years wore on his style changed into this "Liquid Funk" style.  I'm not an LTJ superfan so I don't know exactly what he was playing in 2000 - 2003.  He tends to only play records from his own labels and not much else.  Due to that I'm not going to say this is super authentic.  Mainly I just wanted to theme a mix after someone else and try hard not to sound like its me playing the records.  I ended up doing this a lot more in the future and for me, its more fun to listen to me when I trick myself into thinking its not me.  

Ohh yeah, I made sure to pick out records that were considered "hot" at the time and made sure to have them play more then once during the "event" for realism.

So LTJ Bukem is the third official fake act of our fake Liquicity Festival. I did have two more DJs but they were their own sets, High Contrast from the Knowledge Magazine mix (I had to fix the right and left balance on this one), and Kleez-one's only Liquid Funk set which was really good.  I didn't put them up as they were not my own.

Ambient Jungle (Preview clip)

I was watching a lot of the TV show Ancient Aliens at the time I made this mix.  I had also bought a bunch of modern DNB records from Hospital due to Forza Horizon 2, the video game.  So why not do a mix and call it George Tsoukalos?  Well I'm sad to say this mix is not worthy of being called this.  Tsoukalos is the man, the myth, the legend as they say and this mix is anything but.  Due to this I never typed up the tracklist and I never put it online.

I'm trying to get up every mix I ever did, even the bad ones.  This is one of the bad ones.  There's no bad transitions or anything, I just don't like modern DNB all that much.  Listen to it at your own peril.

I just remembered this mix as there was a really nice Ancient Aliens special on the History Channel tonight.  Other then Tsoukalos, the narrator of this show (and Oak Island) is a scream!  "COULD IT BE?",  "Could Rick and Marty Lagina uncover the truth in 10x?",  "Ancient Alien Astronaut Theorists Agree!"

This is not an era mix, this is a style mix.  The style is UK 'Ardkore Jungle Music that didn't forget it's roots.  Is that even a name for this?  Roots Jungle music? Roots Drum and Bass music? I hope no one calls this oldskool because the only oldskool is a one room school house which has nothing to do with music of any kind.

My first exposure to Unit 1 "Love Me" was not from Ron Wells but rather Cause 4 Concern in their unofficial remix in 2001 called "Give it to em" on Renegade Hardware.  That tune should have been called Unit 1 "Love Me (Cause 4 Concern 2001 Remix)" but I think they were afraid to call attention to the fact that they sampled a Basement Records tune.  The rumor has it that Phil Wells, was happy to go after anyone who sampled or uploaded the basement records back catalog.  For this reason I'm assuming this is why Cause 4 Concern decided to call their remix Cause 4 Concern "Give it to em".  This is likely the 
same reason why Dylan Hilsley called his remix of Wax Doctor "Another Direction", "The Enemy" instead of Wax Doctor "Another Direction (Dylan 2001 Remix)".  For what it's worth, I actually like Cause 4 Concen's and Dylan's remixes of the two Basement Records better then the originals.  At any rate the mix starts off with "Love Me" and is followed by a Steve "Digital" Carr track that I suspect also 
sampled the riff in Love Me, the same groaning synth is present in "Scandal" as is a more mutilated version of the main "Love Me" riff.

Another interesting tidbit is B-Key "Time Zone".  This tune actually uses a sound from Hyper On Experience's "Disturbance".  When I got this B-Key record home from the record store the week it came out I noticed this and went digging for my "Disturbance" tango remix.  Sure enough, the two were meant to be married to each other.  Even more interesting is that the Tango remix of Disturbance has that 
analog synth sound from Terrorize "Such a feeling" just as every single Total Science record coming out in 2001 did.  Fans new to Drum and Bass who didn't know the history could have been tricked into thinking the Tango remix of HOE's Disturbance was a brand new tune in 2001 and yet its from 1993, how cool is that?

I promised myself I would make a new mix of Drum and Bass in this roots style since moving my record collection to easy to access Ikea shelving units.  This is my second attempt at this mix.  My first recording of this was long and perhaps even boring.  This version gets more to the point and finishes strong with one of the best new 1994 style jungle tracks I've ever heard.  It is such a great number that I had to rewind it.

Good music shouldn't die off and I hope there is a resurgence of early 90s rave music again in the future.  I'm quite sick of hearing this ultra polished snore fest dubstep music that's all the rage right now and THAT is the way I feel.

Following up on the Cyberscape 2000 theme, I made another fake rave here. This time I'm going full bore into real DJs tracklistings from the Rolldabeats website.  Specifically for the event Quest "100th Quest" 08-07-93.  I focused on DJs where I have at least 80% of the physical records they played in 1993.  With this Top Buzz set I had every single record with one exception.  The last track, "We are unity" I do have on vinyl however it is pressed off center!!!!  I can't use that.  Fortunately the pirates on lossless music provided and so I can now play it without hearing that wha-wha from the bad pressing.  

For that it's worth, this set does not sound very Top Buzzy to me even though it clearly is.  He tended to play happier music and this set goes pretty damn dark.  Tracks like "Right Guard" and "Deep Space", just don't seem to fit the Top Buzz mold you know?
