This month's episode features the second part of a two-hour discussion on There Goes the Neighborhood, "a feature-length documentary about the people's fight to save New York City-- three years in the making". AAD is joined by filmmaker Ian Phillips and housing justice organizers Arnette Scott and Dannelly Rodriguez, both of whom are featured in the documentary. Dannelly and Arnette are, respectively, key members of the successful fight against Amazon HQ2 in Queens and the current 'No Towers, No Compromise' campaign against a luxury residential development in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Listen for a behind-the-scenes look into the making of There Goes the Neighborhood and a thought-provoking reflection on the state of affordable housing in New York City.

Ian Phillips was born and raised in New York City, where he studied filmmaking at the School of Visual Arts. His first Feature Documentary "Coach Jake" premiered at the Urbanworld Film Festival in September of 2017 and was distributed by First Fun Features. @ianewyork

Dannelly Rodriguez is from Astoria, Queens New York. He is an activist lawyer and organizer for his community. He fights everyday to ensure the liberation and empowerment of all oppressed peoples through lawyering and community building. @dannelly.rodriguez

Longtime Lower East Side resident and Community Advocate. Current sitting executive board member for the District One Community Education Council and newly appointed member of the Community Board 3, which covers the Lower East Side. Based in Manhattan's Chinatown and Lower East Side, Art Against Displacement is a coalition of artists and arts workers that seeks to amplify the demands of those whose lives and livelihoods are placed at risk by predatory development and resettlement, and to work in solidarity with grassroots organizations toward community-led rezoning. The group affirms that gentrification is not an inevitable effect of urban development, and refuses to let the work of cultural producers be instrumentalized towards the displacement of long-term residents and businesses. @aad.nyc

No Wave/Noise music is on the rise and due to the public's interest, I culled through the tapes and made this first pass at an album of the unreleased tranche. There is more studio (mostly recorded at Don Fury's Spring Street Studio as is the bulk of this end-to-end pre-release) and oodles of Live shows. We had our fun back then and now almost 40 years later No Wave/Noise is back more or less or MORE is LES as the comp cassette covering that latter day No Wave and nascent Noise scene is titled in the stocked-up Vault.

In Episode 141 of the CounterVortex podcast, Bill Weinberg defends the notion that he lives on New York's Lower East Side, repudiating those who would insist that his neighborhood is actually the East Village or (worse) NoHo. Weinberg traces the nomenclature controversies going all the way back to the Lenape indigenous villages of the area, Dutch and English colonial settlement, the riots and uprisings of the "Gangs of New York" era, the neighborhood's Puerto Rican identity as Loisaida, the origin of the name "East Village" in the hippie explosion of the 1960s, its cooptation by the real estate industry in the gentrification of the 1980s, and the resultant last gasp of anarchist resistance. Weinberg counts himself among a surviving coterie of old-timers who still consider the entire area to be the Lower East Side.

JK Canepa is a Deep Ecologist, a member of the Eco-Logic collective on WBAI-FM, a community gardener and longtime activist. During the time of legendary actions to save NYC’s beloved and threatened community gardens at the turn of the millenium; she was arrested in the Coqui, a giant (puppet) frog in Esperanza garden in Loisaida. El Coqui’s death by developers galvanized the city and resulted in protection to 100's of community gardens.

Barbara Lee is a poet, activist, singer, art model and former squatter who was a part of the Umbrella House, a squat that still exists on Avenue C. She is featured in War in the Neighborhood by Seth Tobochman, a graphic novel illustrating the L.E.S  of the 1980's - an era of homelessness and gentrification, ACT UP and the AIDS epidemic, tent cities and squatted apartment buildings.
