Note: This recording was made in South Australia during 'Central Daylight Saving Time' (ACDT), which is an important variable to take into account, because it means that the escalated period of human machine activity begins one hour earlier than during 'Central Standard Time' (ACST). The important consequence is that as days grow longer, and First Light occurs earlier in the day-night cycle, human activity abruptly begins one hour earlier with the commencement of 'Daylight Saving', and therefore overlaps, again (and therefore pollutes and interferes with) the period of First Light - or 'The Hour of the Birds', as it is known to Aboriginal peoples: a time that was only momentarily freed from the escalated period of human machine activity, thanks to the earlier rising of the sun, until humans set their clocks back one hour...

2022.09.01 Night Pastures. Late Winter/Early Spring.

I revisited this location, ten nights later, for a different vantage-point, nearer to the Eastern Banjo Frogs (cf. https://soundcloud.com/hearingbeings/20220901-night-pastures-late-winterearly-spring). Soon after recording began, an Australian Magpie in a nearby gum tree uttered a quiet melodic warble, and then continued with a long series of telegraphic, punctuated vocalisations. Finally, closing with another melodic warble, it lapsed into silence again.

2022.09.11 Pine Forest. Full Moon Night. Early Spring.

For some time, my son has wanted to go camping in Gluepot Reserve with me (he's never been there), so we set off in his car one Friday morning. Unfortunately, the dirt road into Gluepot was still impassable, due to heavy rains in previous weeks. Plan B required another three to four hours more driving. We ended up having to stay the first night at Stony Creek Bush Camp Caravan Park, but I was pleasantly surprised and delighted by the variety of birds singing during the evening chorus in the surrounding bushland. Evening was not a good time to record; and besides, this was not really supposed to be a field recording trip, although it did serve as a good location reconnaissance trip; but I couldn't resist setting up an overnight rig in the bush to record the ensuing dawn chorus. With highways only two to three kilometres away on three sides, and quite a few people staying in the campground, I didn't hope for much of a longer soundscape recording; but I knew that at least I'd get some good bird song and bird call samples. As it turned out, most other campers slept in that morning, and highway traffic wasn't quite as bad as I'd expected. The resultant dawn recording, while 'imperfect', seemed to me well worth sharing.

A brief passage selected from a night-to-dawn recording made on 25 December 2022. A Black-winged Currawong (Strepera versicolor melanoptera) alights on a Native Cherry tree (Exocarpos cupressiformis) right beside and above the microphones, and begins picking at the tiny Native Cherries...

Other bird species that can be heard in this recording include (but are not limited to) Australian Golden Whistler, Australian Magpie, Common Blackbird (introduced species), Common Bronzewing, Crimson Rosella (‘Adelaide Rosella’), Grey Fantail, Grey Shrike-thrush, Laughing Kookaburra, Little Raven, Striated Pardalote, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Superb Fairy-wren, White-throated Treecreeper. Other species include the Common Eastern Froglet (Crinia signifera).

(Best listened to with good quality headphones, in a quiet environment, at low to mid volume. Be warned: the dynamics occasionally explode, particularly in the form of Black-winged Currawongs.)

This recording is an early result of experimenting with a pair of omnidirectional and a pair of supercardioid microphones in parallel. The omnis absorb the environing atmospheric ambience, the supercardioids capture a selective and narrower focus of detail. (No processing.)
