This piece was commissioned by the National Orchestra Institute days before the shutdown of 2020. Having just finished my dissertation and with the weight of the impending pandemic on my mind, I set out to write this piece. I believe it is my most melancholic and forlorn to date. While I do not think of this piece as being a "covid piece" I do think it aptly captures the state of mind I was in while writing it. 

"Since about 2016, I have wanted to write a piece which is entirely slow and mostly quiet – one that captures a dim, mysterious, melancholic glow that seems pale, effervescent, and capable of evaporating at any given moment. This craving has been only partially fulfilled in some of the slow movements of my other works – most notably, the second movement of Modus operandi called Dust. However, in the pursuit of contrast, many of these movements stray from their quiet sound worlds and erupt into more passionate and bombastic textures (Encompass Mvt. II, Concerto for Horn Mv.t. II). The title Just dreams not only sets the mood for the nebulous, floating quality of the music but also suggests this mood will be maintained throughout. 

The piece contains three “lines”. The presentation of a new line denotes the start of a new section – these are marked No. I, No. II, and No. III. As the piece progresses, memories and echoes of past lines permeate the sections of the new lines. Their relationships are demonstrated below: 

No. I	= Line 1 + premonitions of Line 2
No. II	= Line 2 + Line 1
No. III	= Line 3 + fragments of Lines 1 & 2 

In lieu of a more contrast-based sense of dramatic trajectory, the form is driven by the counterpoint of the lines, the progress of the somewhat saccharine harmonies, and the subtle transformation of timbre as the lines are filtered though the various instrumental pairings/groupings."

Tyler W. Taylor was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1992. He is currently pursuing his Doctor of Music in composition at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with a minor in music theory and a secondary minor in horn performance. He studies composition with Aaron Travers, as well as horn with Jeff Nelsen and Dale Clevenger. He earned his MM from the Eastman School of Music where he studied composition with David Liptak and Bob Morris, and horn with W. Peter Kurau. He earned his BM from the University of Louisville where he studied composition with Steve Rouse and Krzysztof Wołek, and
horn with Bruce Heim.

As a composer and aspiring contemporary chamber musician, Tyler finds the composer-performer experience to be the most inspiring. Most recently, he performed his horn concerto Lake Music with Orchestra Enigmatic in Louisville, Kentucky. He was also invited to perform in the premiere of his horn quartet “some notes” – a commission by the Allumer Horn Quartet of Louisiana. He has enjoyed similar experiences at summer festivals including the Bang on a Can Summer Festival, the Oregon Bach Composers Symposium, the Sewanee Summer Music Festival, and the Imani Winds Chamber Music
Festival. Tyler has also honed his skill as a contemporary performer in groups such as the IU New Music Ensemble, Eastman’s Musica Nova, Ossia New Music, the University of Louisville New Music Ensemble, and more.

His latest performances include the premiere of his duo for marimba and horn Dispositions, commissioned by Jake Nelson; a duo for trombone and piano Canned, commissioned by Cole Bartels; and his master’s thesis Liberation Compromise for 17 players – winner of a 67th Annual BMI Student Composer Award and the 2016 Howard Hanson Ensemble Prize. Other notable performances include his sinfonietta Encompass – winner of the 2015 Howard Hanson Ensemble Prize – during the 2017 University of Louisville New Music Festival and his mixed sextet Burlesque Suite performed by members of the Talea Ensemble.

Tyler’s recent pieces are explorations of the different ways identity can be expressed in musical scenarios. Common among these pieces is a sense of contradiction – sometimes whimsical, sometimes alarming – that comes from the interaction of diverse musical layers. This expression of contradiction likely comes from his being a person of mixed race and feeling neither white nor black; being raised on hip hop and R&B while inheriting a European tradition of “classical art music” as his primary form of musical expression in spite of having little or no other cultural ties to Europe, and pursuing a career in a field that generally lacks representation of his demographic.

Music has always been to me, my dream, my lifelong pursuit, my passion, my heart, my music.  I'm a new Independent Christian rock musician singer/songwriter.  These are my first licensed songs and instrumentals.  I grew up in a musical family in the small town of Bathurst, Canada. I've been playing since I can remember. I like to play from soft picking and smooth acoustics and vocals, to course guitar, inspiring leads, and rock vocals. I started releasing my music because I love to write music and share it with you.  To you who like my new song, it melts my heart in truth...
