Jon sunsets a cancer scare

Jon's wife Christy got pancreatic cancer ten years ago, but Jon still carries the fear of losing her. It's a long hallway from diagnostics to recovery, but Jon's found the right doctor: Todd helps him stop over-intellectualizing, cutting through the voices in his head, until only sweet remission (from the Latin "to relax,") colors the horizon. Revealed to Jon on the eve of Thanksgiving, 2022, Todd's tongue-in-cheek poem is written in the talky après-dinner-party style of Tony Hoagland, and features candid, ad-libbed cameos by Thomas Merton, Flannery O'Connor, Cormac McCarthy, Czesław Miłosz, and Raymond Carver, who, like all of us, just wants to be loved. From sorrow to joy and back again, this story lets Christy have the final word, and has Jon breathing a sigh of relief.

Thanksgiving


Inevitably, you find out
you are lost, really lost; 
blind, really blind; 
stupid, really stupid; 
dry, really dry; 
hungry, really hungry; 
and you go on from there,

says Tony. Flan says, 
where you came from
is gone, where you 
thought you were going
was never there, and 
where you are is no 
good unless you can 

get away from it.
Tom says, I tried 
following God, but 
following somebody 
who’s everywhere and
nowhere at once is just
humiliating. Milo 

stops kissing the 
stem of his pipe long
enough to say, A few
of me followed God, a
few went crazy, a 
few got day jobs, and 

at least one of me is 
upstairs right now, 
agonizing over the
tense of a verb. A bird
trapped in a barn, says 

McCarthy from the couch 
where we thought he’d 
been asleep, passes 
through the slats of 
daylight bird by bird. 

I just want to be loved,
says Ray, is that 
lost, blind, stupid, and 
hungry enough for you
screwballs? And now
Christy’s rounding the
corner with a tray of 
fresh drinks. Shut up,
she says, all of you, and 

pay attention. You don’t
get too many more 
sunsets like this one.

A HAT STAND FOR BIRDS  

In Bora Bora
kings pay priests to pray for them

because they believe
without those pleas for mercy
they’ll become hat stands after death
and be forced to serve all ghosts—
even those who once lived as lowly peasants. 

But I believe good karma must be earned 
through sincere action: 
unless you learn to serve 
others in this life
you'll be made to stand
as a hat stand
in the next.

Not a punishment
but a blessing--
to be deprived 
of a chance at education
would be damnation.

I myself have learned much
from all the work I’ve done
holding hats and coats
as well as umbrellas
for countless others--
both high and low.  

Under the weight and restraint 
of such servitude
I broke open for a moment once
and in my brief high flight
I looked down to see
a hat stand transform into a tree--

hundreds, maybe thousands 
of rustling, restless birds 
flitted through its branches—
I still hear their cries in my heart. 

I’m listening carefully to that cacophony— 
hoping I may one day perceive
the glorious design of a symphony.

This poem affirms the duality of love. A boy and a girl are the two lovers; on one hand, the boy is a lover, but on the other hand, the girl is a lover. He is excited and she is blissful. His love is firm while her love is gentle. Though he is firm, his love is soft. The girl, on the other hand, loves the boy in a gentle and soft way. His love is firm but her love is gentle and soft. He is a lover and she is a lover. He is the lover boy and she is the lover girl. Though both of them are lovers, they are different in their love. This song of love appears as a clear outline of the dichotomy of love and the dichotomy of love appears as a clear outline of the opposites. The love and the love are diametrically opposite to each other. This duality of the love of land and the love of love is fully realized in this poem.
A poet in a more personal way, he found the harmony of his life with his love of country reflected in his poetry. He would find a way to reconcile his contradictions through his many poems that were prompted by the conflicts he faced. Hafiz is most famous for his poetry in Persian and Urdu, the latter being the language of his native Pakistan and the former is the language of Iran. His poetry in Persian is widely read and discussed. His poetry in Urdu is not that well known but also appreciated for its poetic quality. He is also a well known folklorist and singer of Urdu poetry. He was also active in the art and culture movement in India, especially in the Mughal period. His poetry is written in such a way that it pleases the hearts and the minds. The English translation by Edward FitzGerald in 1859 made Hafiz well known to the English speaking audience. The popularity of his poems in English fuelled his popularity and fame in the West. His poetry is used in schools and colleges as a teaching aid for Urdu poetry and philosophy.
In sum, it is this romantic love that separates the lovers of Hafiz from Ali. The two poets live in entirely different worlds. They express their love differently and their poems reflect this difference.
If one were to compare the romantic love poems of Hafiz and Ali, it would be apparent that the two poets have very different responses to love. In the following poem, Hafiz writes that the love for his beloved is overwhelming and defies all human logic and law. He compares his emotions to the strength of a hurricane and the human body to an eggshell. This, of course, is the opposite of Ali's love for his beloved, which is so intense that it is all-consuming and nothing can stem its flow. 1549432396
