It was still a warm December when we met again for her last session. Grace brought along Walter who was going to be a part of the session. We took the ferry to meet Liane in Mui Wo at Ning's Yard, the spiritual retreat center she renovated, a short walk from the pier.

In this solemn track, Liane and Walter begin with a harmonica, flute and ocean drum. Grace uses her voice to hold long notes to the extent of her lungs, trembling to sustain them, sometimes morphing into overtone singing. The stark thumps of the ocean drum awaken the imagination. At its climax, a helicopter rips the sky open leaving only the drum bold enough to accompany it, then quickly disappears as if it were a dream, right on cue.

Wonderfully layered, minimal, and unfinished- but complete.

Sound Bath Sessions 174: Grace Chen, Liane Mah, Walter Chan

Grace and I took the 6am ferry to Mui Wo just before dawn on a warm early November day. A short walk from the dock, the silver mine waterfall was small, with a big sound. We settled on a rock in the middle of the stream and I placed the microphone closer to Grace to make sure I could hear the delicate sounds of the lyre over the crashing waters.

The waterfall provided a thick bed of white noise for her sounds to float in and out of the track. All context of place was swallowed by the noise save the occasional bird noises at both ends of the recording.

The track sounds hopeful and fresh, complementing the cool early morning. The creeping sun over the surrounding mountains of Lantau pushed breezes that caressed my cheek and filled my lungs. Goosebumps on my arm. Grace pauses several times in her song to take in her surroundings to breath the air, feel the sun, and be in the presence of nature.

Sound Bath Sessions 177: Grace Chen

After completing another project in March, I was anxious to get back out there and record another session. It had been so long since I had a sound bath, and my mind and body really needed it. I recorded Noel about a year ago and still needed to record her last track for the project, so I contacted her and set it up. 

We met in the heart of Central HK on a Sunday afternoon at a small yoga studio where she sometimes holds her sessions. The room had a softer Hong Kong din that coincidentally featured in her previous recordings. The hushed static of distant traffic and passersby below contrasts with the calmness in the room. You belong.

The second recording begins with chimes and a rain stick while the hums waft in from the few windows of the space. I love how Noel uses two hands to transition between instruments, creating this gentle crossfade of textures and layering. In her calm style, she varies the length of time between strikes, letting the bowls sing either alone or with friends.

Sound Bath Sessions 173: Noel Chan

Rachel Jamiro began her sound healing journey in 2019 and offers sound baths to complement her essential oil business. We recorded at Hush Haven in BF Resort Village in Las Piñas. The space is a repurposed photo studio/multi-use space with high ceilings and a perfect amount of natural light. Rachel also has recently taken up powerlifting (awesome) and sometimes works out at the gym one of the residents has established in the garage adjacent to the space. 

This recording was a gong piece with her 4 planetary gongs. The gongs had enough energy to fill the space and make use of the reverberant acoustics that amplified their feelings. There were some weight-clanging sounds that I felt had a relationship to Rachel’s powerlifting ambitions. A passing metal bell also complements the metallic theme of the gongs and offers a snapshot of the surrounding environment. I think I will keep them in.

Sound Bath Sessions 070: Rachel Jamiro

It was cool at 8am in Singapore, with barely any traffic getting to the north end of Serangoon Road. Haruka said to meet her at the back entrance of the space. I passed by it at first, mistaking it for a storage room until she poked her head from atop a spiral staircase to welcome me up. The space was dark with a small strip of curtained clerestory windows, textured stucco walls, a metal roof, and uneven wood floorboards. It had an early morning mood, still sleepy. She sometimes holds her sessions here.

For this session, she opens with an ocean drum, chanting just as it starts to rain. Gentle morning raindrops on the steel roof match the cracking of the structure as it starts to wake. The space is alive, moving. This session feels nostalgic, like a soundtrack to past memories, solemn and thankful.

Sound Bath Sessions 075: Haruka Hikita

I recorded Jacqueline Tay’s sound baths at her apartment in Sengkang, the northeast part of Singapore. Her living room had no furniture save a dining table and 5 gongs. She mainly plays planetary gongs has an array of mallets and silicone mallets rain stick, and conch shell.

Our first session was a warm-up for the general audience. She blessed her gongs with ocean sounds from a conch shell before announcing the beginning of the session with a loud call that resonated the gongs. She slowly emerges from silence with a large friction mallet waking up the gongs one by one before she begins release their vocal spirits. The smaller friction mallets created higher, human-like voices. This session was dark and moving, with ominous swells swallowing and swirling us around its tumultuous sea. Until, in an instant, everything stops and we can finally take a breath. The sea disappears and we find ourselves back on land as she turns the rain stick and plays the chime harp.

Sound Bath Sessions 076: Jacqueline Tay

I ventured to the Tiong Bahru area to record Noel and Fiona in their apartment where they regularly hold sessions. Their large living room showcases their instruments and the many things they offer during their sessions such as cacao and teas. They both have had training from gong masters around the world and have visited gong makers in Germany. Fiona is an Innerdance disciple and regularly holds sessions in SG.

 Fiona uses the gongs with other instruments and her voice in a loose, expressive way. Her tribal chanting was especially invigorating and included growls and primitive vocalizations. This track is the first solo track I recorded of Fiona.
