Field notes:

Two varieties of frogs sounding out on a cold winter's evening in Yankalilla ~6pm. The dominant sound is that of Southern Brown Tree frogs, whereas the lower 'guiro' sound is the Painted (Burrowing)frog.

An excerpt from my first recording in the field with a Lewitt double-NOS array. Have sometimes been using these mics as separate pairs for a couple of years, now, but this is a first test with them in this double array (unattended recording). Very chuffed to have been privy, close up, to a long and occasionally volatile corroboree of White-winged Choughs, of which this is a brief excerpt. Recorded respectfully on the land of the Danggali people.

It's not something I usually do, but it seems like a good moment in which to give a spontaneous and genuinely heartfelt plug to Pro Audio LA (https://www.proaudiola.com/). This is a small business that does what it loves doing, and loves what it does, and does it very well. But, like so many small businesses, it has been beaten about by the last few years of COVID events (while many big businesses have nevertheless profited massively). To mark the 70th anniversary of Britain's atomic weapons tests at Emu Field in South Australia – the first on terrestrial land in Australia – author and academic Dr Elizabeth Tynan speaks about her book, The Secret of Emu Field: Britain’s forgotten atomic tests in Australia. It was at Emu Field, SA on October 15, 1953 that a terrifying black mist spread across the land after an atomic bomb detonation (Totem 1), bringing death and sickness to Aboriginal people and other people in its path. Secrecy around the testing activities and its effects still exists today. Totem 2 was detonated on October 27, 1953. Elizabeth is an Associate Professor at James Cook University. Her previous book, Atomic Thunder: The Maralinga Story, won the Prime Minister's Literary Award for Australian History and the CHASS Australia Book Prize in 2017. Tristan Louth-Robins is a South Australian artist working principally in the medium of sound art and field recording. Ideas of sound and its signification are key elements in Louth-Robins' practice, traversing the space between the visual and aural his work is realised through the mediums of recordings, installation, visual art and performance. He is interested in sound and its associative implications - including its relationship to objects, technology, urban space, memory and the natural world. 


Since 2005, Louth-Robins has presented work in Australia and internationally as a solo artist, whilst also collaborating with artists, writers, researchers, musicians and performers. 

Working across a vast array of activities encompassing composition, sound design, installation art, field recording and workshops, his work has been featured in events such as the Adelaide Festival of Arts (2006), The National Regional Arts Festival (2012), Mildura-Wentworth Arts Festival (2013), Fairfax Festival (2013) and Adelaide Fringe Festival (2014); and selected works exhibited at galleries including The Australian Experimental Art Foundation (2009), SASA Gallery (2012, 2015), Light Square Gallery (2012) and FELT Space (2015). His audio works have been broadcast on radio including Radio National, Classic FM, The BBC (UK), Acoustic Frontiers (USA) and RBB (Germany).
