I’ve always thought if you can make a slogan into a catchy enough song, it’ll take on a life of its own. I’ve had this refrain in my head for a couple years now, but it never had a place to live until this past spring when a trans woman was brutally attacked at the light rail station a block away from my house. I was part of a group of community members who organized a rally a week later to reclaim the space, saying we’re here to Defend Trans Lives and Celebrate Trans Joy. Even though there was snow blowing down on us the entire time, that didn’t stop 200 people showing up to be community together and we closed singing this song.
