With Andy recovering after surgery, and Lee playing a festival, we didn't get chance to record the usual show this week.  However, with the sad passing of William Friedkin this week, Lee put together a tribute to the legendary director, and we also thought it would be nice to republish our deep-dive into perhaps his most famous work, The Exorcist, which we covered earlier this year as part of the lookback at 1973.

De twaalfde aflevering van het derde seizoen van Cinepraatjes, de podcast van Cinemaatjes. Helemaal vanuit ons vakantiehuisje in Normandië schuift Patrice wederom aan om ietwat onvoorbereid een podcast met ons op te nemen. We namen deze aflevering op de zesde verjaardag van Cinemaatjes. We staan nog even stil bij het overlijden van William Friedkin. Tijdens de vakantie kregen we van een Maatje van ons een mailtje en dat is het begin van een volledig nieuw item. We hadden zowaar een televisie met Netflix en Amazon Prime in ons vakantiehuisje en keken samen naar ‘Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant’ met prachtige rollen van Jake Gyllenhaal en Dar Salim (jaja, dat zei William fout in de aflevering) op Amazon Prime en de horrorfilm ‘No One Gets Out Alive’ op Netflix. Het ontbrak aan een DVD kast op het vakantie-adres, dus bedacht William om random een film uit de iMDB Top 250 lijst te pikken, het was er eentje die we alledrie nog niet hebben gezien (of had Pat ‘m toch wel gezien). In de Special praten we o.a. over de overkill aan slechte films op de streamingdiensten en de schrijvers- en acteursstaking en wat dat voor gevolgen zal hebben in de toekomst. En uiteraard hadden we ook nog vragen van luisteraars liggen over o.a. onze favoriete Spider-Man, magische kinderfilms, DC of Marvel en onze favoriete films uit ons geboortejaar.

S03e12 - Vanuit Frankrijk, Guy Ritchie's The Covenant, No One Gets Out Alive en veel meer over films

One of the greatest American film artists, William Friedkin, has passed away at the age of 87. The son of Ukrainian Jewish immigrant parents (who fled their country after the antisemitic pogroms of the early 20th Century), Friedkin was a shitty student and a great basketball player until he discovered cinema in the '60s. He then rose from a Hollywood journeyman doing shitty films for studios until it all came together with The French Connection and the greatest horror film of all time in The Exorcist. Friedkin would evolve from being the most celebrated auteur in America, to a scrappy indie arthouse director who warred with studios with financing, to an even scrappier arthouse auteur adapting transgressive plays in his later life. What. A. Fucking. Career.

We're taking a quick break from our International Film Tour part 2 to pay tribute to one of the greats. That's right we're freakin' on Friedkin and talk some of his more notable flicks before diving into his 2nd horror film 1990's The Guardian.

For our 400th episode we indulge in a pair of horror sequels, both heavy on faith, possession, and Christianity. One is part of a modern universe of interconnected stories, characters, and demons, the other represents the reignition of a series whose sequels have been produced intermittently for fifty years without receiving anything like the acclaim of the film that spawned them. The Nun II is the eighth film in the ten-year-old Conjuring Universe; The Exorcist: Believer is only the sixth Exorcist film in half a century. Truly, they don't make them like they used to.

Neither film in this double bill is very good in totality, but The Nun II contains imaginative and effective set pieces and visual ideas, while The Exorcist: Believer is content to discard a reasonably interesting first act in favour of useless and charmless reference to, and pathetic reenactment of, William Friedkin's 1973 original. We discuss what we think the films are about, wittingly or otherwise - horror is commonly understood to often allegorise and express the ills and worries of the societies that produce them, and we consider the ways in which these films might be doing so. And there's much to compare and contrast between them, including their characters' attitudes to the supernatural; the ways in which religion, be it Catholicism specifically or Christianity more generally, plays into their stories and atmospheres; and the kinds of imagery through which they attempt to instil fear in their audiences. And we take time to criticise many, many examples of the weakness of the storytelling in Believer.

The Nun II, like its 2018 predecessor, is not very good, but it is fun. The Exorcist: Believer is neither good nor fun. Happy 400th episode!

160 - To Live And Die In L.A. (1985) Nostalgia For My Father's Junk

This week, we discover fear pays poor wages as we're joined by comedian and good old Saskatchewan boy Rory Dunn for an unseen classic from his extensive physical media collection, about desperate men on a dangerous mission. It's 1977's Sorcerer, directed by William Friedkin, and starring Roy Scheider, Bruno Cremer, Francisco Rabal, Amidou, Ramon Bieri and Peter Capell. Gorgeously shot and backed by a synth score by Tangerine Dream, it's a white-knuckle thriller, as Friedkin follows up The Exorcist with a movie that feels just as tense and scary in an entirely different way. Plus, all three of us have been to the movies recently, with theatrical field reports on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Hit Man.
