Criseyde is my feminist revenge opera in which I re-wrote Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde.

I used Chaucer's own Middle English and twisted it around to give the female character Criseyde a way out of the control and abuse.  

A chamber opera for 5 solo singers, ensemble of 3 singers, and 14 instruments, Criseyde was performed in concert by the New York City Opera VOX festival of contemporary American operas, and recorded by The American Virtuosi in 2008.  On this recording soprano Kerri Marcinko is the heroine Criseyde, baritone Richard Byrne is Troilus and bass Larry Long is Pandar, with conductor Kenneth Hamrick and the musicians of The American Virtuosi.  

They are singing in Middle English.  

The action: Troilus is in bed pretending to be sick.  Pandar tricks Criseyde into coming to see him. The Ladies watch.  Criseyde maintains her composure, but finds herself trapped into accepting Troilus as her lover.

"This piece was composed using classical sonata form as a point of departure for a modern tonal and rhythmic palette, and each of the three movements evokes a distinctive mood. 

The Allegro introduces a strong theme, first heard in the clarinet and then developed for all three instruments throughout the movement. A quiet piano entrance begins the Adagio, an unabashedly romantic gesture that gradually builds with a lyrical, ascending line. The third movement, Vivace, is a fun, raucous sort of gypsy dance that cavorts through bitonality and shifting meters and ends the entire Trio with a big grin."

This award-winning piece has been heard in concerts across the U.S. and in Europe. The Price Trio gave the piece its British premiere in July 1999 at St. Mark's Hall in London, as a featured American work at the International Congress of Women in Music, and was also the ensemble which performed it at a 2002 concert held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.

On Parade is an English “quick step” march featuring a typical first and second strain, trio, and an unusual secondary trio (a trio-within-a-trio!) that modulates the piece to a third tonal area. The 2020 edition resolves several practical and stylistic issues with the available 1914 Boosey & Hawkes score-less parts that can be found through the US Library of Congress or IMSLP. Instrument parts have been struck or added to modernize the instrumentation. Stylistically, the dynamic range has been expanded and several courtesy slurs and articulation markings have been added to facilitate cleanliness of lines and phrases. Rehearsal letters, measure numbers, and a tempo marking have been added for convenience and errata has been fixed. 

About the Composer: 

Amanda Christina Elizabeth Aldridge, also called Amanda Ira Aldridge, was born in London in 1866. She was the daughter of African American Shakespearian actor, Ira Aldridge, and Swedish opera singer, Amanda Pauline von Brandt; and sister to Luranah Aldridge, also an opera singer. In her youth, Aldridge was an accomplished pianist and singer (a student of Jenny Lind) and studied composition at the Royal College. In later years, she taught private voice and elocution lessons to British and American singers and actors, including Black performers Paul Robeson, Roland Hayes, and Marian Anderson.
Her compositional career spanned from approximately 1906 to 1934 and included instrumental music, seven piano suites, and at least twenty-six art and parlor songs. Embracing her African American heritage, several of Aldridge’s works incorporate African musical material or are settings of African American texts by poets such as Paul Laurence Dunbar. While much of her music was published under the male pseudonym, Montague Ring, her true identity was an open secret amongst her supporters, family, and music circles. Her most popular works include Three Arabian Dances (1919), Three African Dances (1913), and Carnival Suite of Five Dances (1924) with many works written or arranged for military and dance bands of the time.
Aldridge never married nor bore children but kept in close social contact with her students and cared for two birds, Mr. and Mrs. Browne, through her life. She died after a short illness in 1956.

Britlin Lee Furst is an up and coming film composer specializing in modern string technique, atmospheric vocals, and synth programming. Her latest contribution to film is an additional music credit for "57 Seconds" starring Morgan Freeman and Josh Hutcherson. She is a proud member of the Alliance for Women Film Composers and was mentored by songwriter extraordinaire. Thomas Bahler.

One of the pioneers of electronic music, Alice Shields creates cross-cultural electronic and acoustic operas and music for voice, dance, theater and video. Her work is influenced by Japanese Noh Theater and Indian Bharata Natyam dance-drama, and has been performed by the New York City Opera Vox Festival, Academie der Künste (Berlin), Venice Biennale, Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, Arangham Dance Theater (India), Dance Alloy (Pittsburgh), NYC-Electroacoustic Music Festival, Santa Fe Opera Gallery Concerts, Association for the Promotion of New Music, American Composers Alliance, Ensemble Pi, Iktus Percussion and other groups.

Composer, born in Poland and established in Paris (France), Sylvia Filus is graduated in Film Music Composition and in Orchestration (First Prize). 

She has composed music for several movies, chamber music ensembles, symphonic orchestra and big band. In 2008, at the request of the Pomeranian Society Musica Sacra and the Chamber Orchestra of Gdynia, Sinfonietta Nordica, she wrote the Cycle of 3 melodies for mezzo-soprano, barytone, and orchestra, which was performed during the festival The Music of Words in Gdynia (Poland). 

In 2010 she was commissioned by the Polish Strauss Society to commemorate Chopin’s 200 Anniversary and wrote Fantasia in "Salt" Minor performed by the orchestra Obligato at the Symphonic Chopin concert in the Salt Mine of Wieliczka (near Cracow). During the same year, Sylvia Filus was honored with the Trophy of Women‘s Success by the Association France-Euro-Méditerranée and became finaliste of the competition International Music Prize for Excellence in Composition awarded by the National Academy of Music.

In 2011 Sylvia Filus composed for her first feature film Le Bout du monde (The End of the World) by the marocan filmmaker Hakim Noury and for the documentary « Avec toi sans toi » by Francesca Ragusa. Commissioned by Lobster Films and SACEM for the european film collection on line Europa Film Treasures she wrote music for two silent movies: “Danseur de jazz” (feature) and “Troppo Bello!” (short). 

In 2012 Sylvia composed for the full length documentary « Fishermen » by Viktoria Marinov and in 2013 she has been awarded in the International Composition Competition "Artistes en herbe" in Luxembourg. 

In 2014 she took part of the B.O. Concert, 25 french composers film music concert in Paris and in the Spring Concert in Padua (Italy), where her piece "The Cobweb" was premiered by the orchestra I Solisti Veneti conducted by Claudio Scimone. 

In 2020, Sylvia Filus composed music for the movie « Quand je serai grande » (When I grow up) by Yves Levy, which received the Sacem grant for original music and in 2021, to the the poetry « Les plaisir de la porte » (The pleasures of the door) by Francis Ponge as well as the poetry by Jolanda Podejma-Eloyanne. 

On 2023 she writes music for the short movie « À Fleur de peau » by Kathie Kriegel and takes part of the program Crescendo and the residency TRIO from Maison du Film and Sacem.
