Cecelia’s fascination with World War II was coupled with good luck when she met German-immigrant Edith, a WWII survivor.

After years of urging, Cecelia finally got permission from Edith to write her story. The book, called Back to Bremen (titled after Edith’s childhood hometown), is what movies are made of; displacement and famine as Edith walks across Europe with her family, carrying their baby sister and hiding from the Third Reich. 

Hear Edith recount her childhood memories of nightly shelling in her small German village, how she and her family narrowly escaped the Nazi’s time and time again, and their escape from East Germany, reuniting with lost family members and, eventually, making her way to the US.

Japan's longest serving prime minister, Shinzo Abe tried to rewrite the genocidal history of the fascist Japanese empire. And he and his Nazi-collaborating grandfather enjoyed staunch Western support.

After World War II, the US government pardoned and recruited many of the fascists who had led imperial Japan, like Abe's grandfather Nobusuke Kishi, putting in power war criminals who had committed genocide in China, Korea, and Southeast Asia, carrying out biological warfare, human experimentation, and mass sexual slavery.

Benjamin Norton discusses how Japan's political system still today is a one-party right-wing regime run by descendants of these fascist war criminals.

Aug. 14 marks the 77th anniversary of President Truman’s announcement of the surrender of Japan to the Allied forces, effectively ending World War II in the United States. Rhode Island is the only state that officially recognizes the anniversary, observed as Victory Day annually on the second Monday in August. In recent decades, some Rhode Islanders have argued that the focus on victory over Japan contributes to rising anti-Asian xenophobia, and serves as a reminder of the racism and persecution experienced by Japanese Americans during World War II. Lois Harada is a Providence artist and printmaker behind the Rename Victory Day campaign. Our afternoon host Dave Fallon spoke with Harada about her work, and her ideas for how to make Victory Day more inclusive of all Rhode Islanders.
