The key to Big Bar’s contradictions is in the name. It’s actually a really small bar, tucked into an East Village side street. It’s a club with almost nightly DJs where it’s too cozy to dance, and a jazz venue—at least in a spiritual sense, because musicians are only booked sometimes. Mostly, it’s a neighborhood hang, glowing red thanks to a tinted lightbulb screwed into the ceiling. 

Max and I dreamed up 3 People because we each spent memorable nights at Big Bar. We heard DJs spinning Donald Byrd and Larry Coryell at primetime on weekends and watched audiences bob along in their booths. We saw a copy of the St. Mark’s Poetry Project Newsletter stuck in the typewriter by the door—we resolved that we could infuse a steady stream of experimental verse into our DJ sets and no one would boot us onto the sidewalk. Big Bar matches the spirit of 3 People: informal yet maximal, loquacious but grooving, jazz-oriented though insistent, acoustic even if only in feeling. It’s where we spin when we want to play a hometown show.

We performed there once a month or so between June 2024 and the winter of 2025. Our sets were always five or six hours long, which allowed us to lock in to a leisurely rhythm that helped our collaboration bloom. We grew our vernacular, developed tendencies and tics, broke them, and built up newer, better ones. “Gravel Beach: 3 People Live at Big Bar” was culled from a set on January 25, 2025 after 3 People, still not even half a year old, had been battle-tested in venues across Brooklyn and Manhattan. We played for five hours, but offer you two-and-a-half hours that capture the arc of the evening—recorded live on our open-source DJing software.  

Like most of our live shows, this set is entirely improvised, with the exception of the first moments. We had decided a couple of days earlier that pairing a Chuck Perrin spoken-word track, “Gravel Beach,” with the orchestrated composition “Bunny” by Kobza gave the opening an air of grandeur and momentum. Unbeknownst to us, “Bunny” had a link to Big Bar. This song kicks off Even the Forest Hums: Ukrainian Sonic Archives 1971-1996, a compilation of Soviet-era Ukrainian music that the venerable reissue label Light in The Attic put out in 2024. Big Bar held the record’s release party months before we dropped it in our set. Bunny came home again.  

Needless to say: This party mix arose from dastardly times. I will not do justice to them in this note, except to mention that Trump was inaugurated for a second term mere days prior. The world was bearing down on our festivities at 75 East 7th Street, and we chose to refuse escapism as a goal of dance music. There’s a friction between words and music, and that abrasion creates the sparks of meaning. We played records that Saturday for the reasons that we so often do: to have a fun evening, sure, but also to reflect reality back at itself.
