En un día soleado en la Laguna de los Padres, observamos y escuchamos muchas especies pero en especial, llegando el atardecer encontramos al carpincho (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), el roedor más grande del mundo, en su hábitat natural. Estos mamíferos semiacuáticos, que habitan en manada cerca de los humedales pampeanos, son extremadamente sociales y se comunican mediante sonidos como gruñidos, silbidos y ladridos cortos. Mientras descansan o se alimentan en la vegetación acuática, sus vocalizaciones son clave para mantener la cohesión del grupo, alertar sobre depredadores o marcar territorios. La riqueza sonora de sus comportamientos revela la compleja vida social de esta especie en estos ecosistemas tan importantes.  🌿🐾

The Use of Bioacoustics for Conservation

The Pallas' Leaf Warbler is certainly one of the most beautiful leaf warblers of the Western Palearctic. Coveted in Europe as a rare and exceptional species during migration, few European people come into contact with its song. Yet its complex song is just as attractive and at the same time little studied.
In Asia, on the other hand, the bird is common and therefore receives much less attention. Here it is simply one species within the large variation of leaf warblers, which, in contrast to the European representatives, almost all have complex songs.

Gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis, are small fish that fill the estuaries of Louisiana. In fact, they are everywhere that the rivers meet the seas along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, from Mexico to Nova Scotia. As such, these fish can be used as biosensors providing indicators of toxicity.  

In collaboration with the research lab of Benjamin Dubansky at LSU, killifish data has been sampled and gone through a process of sonification and musification to create this work. Sonification provides a direct path from data to audio to hear the dynamics of the killifish cardiovascular system. The data is also put through a number of analytical processes which then map onto musical parameters in a process of musification. This work blends both approaches allowing us to musically explore these tiny yet significant animals. In the words of Dr. Dubansky, they are, "an army of sensitive biosensors, guarding our coasts from incoming and domestic chemical threats. Killifish act as beacons for environmental injustice and public health disparity."

This is from the series of sleep aid sounds. I recorded this in July during a full moon night from my cabin on the beach town of Piracanga where one can hear the constant ebb and flow of the ocean waves, the night insects with their waves complimenting our sleep cycles through the night.

The science of sounds in Yellowstone National Park

Situated in northern Victoria and part of the Murray Darling Basin, the Goulburn Broken Catchment comprises the catchments of the Goulburn and Broken rivers and part of the Murray River valley.

 The Goulburn Broken CMA was established in 1997 as the peak natural resource management body in the catchment to develop and oversee the implementation of the Regional Catchment Strategy. 

 The organisation is working to ensure land and water resources are protected and enhanced as well as improving the region’s social wellbeing, environmental quality and productive capacity in a sustainable manner.
