Composed for the Ronen Chamber Ensemble, this piece is a mixed quartet (clarinet, saxophone, violoncello, and percussion) that explores my impressions of the Gifts of the Spirit from the First Book of Corinthians from the New Testament - the music is by turns sweet, frantic, soft, acerbic, and insistent.

Sometimes a new voice comes along with a critical message. And when that message resonates with an audience that has unconsciously been craving it for long, the reach is inevitably wider than mainstream media is ready to accept. 

Sa'ra Charismata is without a doubt such a voice. Her debut single “Gold Digga”, a poignant attack on the world order today, merges a sultry delivery with a hard hitting political message as she personally challenges a dangerous status quo, not only in the world of music, but across most spectra of society. 

Sa’ra explains, “We have lost touch of who we are at our spiritual core and suffer as we continue to define others and ourselves by material possessions and status, a disease firmly embedded into our social structures.” 

Sa’ra Charismata, a musical muse born to Eritrean parents, raised in Stockholm, Sweden and most recently residing in New York City, writes and co-produces all of her own material. In her process, she seems driven by forces described by herself as beyond her own. Some would call energies of this nature otherworldly. Sa’ra possesses that uncanny knack for drawing in a listener with triumphantly beautiful melodies and trippy beats whilst cleverly addressing the critical questions of our generation.

Capturing the essence of a song is better than layering it to death

I am an eclectic composer who writes with a postmodern mischievousness: my pieces can be comedic/ironic, simple/complex, or humble/reverent. My recent projects have taken a turn toward turn towards the sweeter side, exploring a consonant adiatonicism.

Chances are that if you have listened to Saturday Night Live (NBC), Good Morning America (ABC), The Weather Channel, E Entertainment, Lifetime, Fox Business, Maury Povich, or flown on JetBlue,  Airtran, Frontier, that you have heard music by jazz artist/producer/composer Darryl Alexander. His dream growing up was to be a professional baseball player. A batboy at the age of 9, by age 10 he was pitching in his league’s championship series. Darryl’s baseball path would lead him to scholarship offers from numerous universities, including Boston University. Darryl would have the opportunity to play with and against notable major leaguers and NFL and CFL coordinators. Ironically, while Darryl was pursuing a baseball career, he also was developing his skills as a musician, starting, like most, in the school band, playing trombone, tuba, and drums.
Throughout the years, Darryl has been blessed with the opportunity to perform and record with extraordinary musicians, such as saxophonists Jeff Kashiwa of the Rippingtons, Jackiem Joyner, Kenny Blake, Mark Earley (Roomful of Blues), Vince Andrews (Toto), David Kana, Chris Karlic, Joe Graziosi, Vocalists Shirley Murdock, John Madgett, pianists Kim Pensyl, Alton Merrell (Christian McBride), Brett Williams (Snarky Puppy), Cliff Barnes (Marcus Miller), Herb McMullen, Jackie Warren,  Vince Hathaway, Gary Boggess, Pete Tokar (gold recording engineer for Gerald LeVert, O’Jays, 3LW), and guitars Ken Karsh (Bobby McFerren), Duane Tribune (Urban Jazz Coalition), Jeffrey Green, Phil Bruno and Teddy Panteles.
