Since their album In the Mountain in the Clouds, I've been completely hooked on Portugal. The Man, and their album collaboration with Danger Mouse for Evil Friends, although a slight deviation from the group's usual sound, was all in all a very solid album with a more energetic zing to it. Now, Portugal. The Man fans have something new to look forward to. The band has teamed up with the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute to spread the an important message regarding the rapid extinction of the Sumatran Tiger. With less than 400 of these beautiful tigers left in the world, the band has recorded a new track entitled "Endangered Song".
The track has only been released on 400 vinyl copies distributed to influencers who are asked to digitize the album. The vinyl itself is made out of materials that will degrade over time, so unless the track is digitized and spread, the song itself will disappear as well as the Sumatran Tiger. Please spread the word of this beautiful message, help support the repopulation of the Sumatran Tiger, and share this fantastic new song. Roxy's Return

Rhythm and Roots presents ‘A Guide to the Birdsong of South America’, an compilation of music inspired by birdsong and a project fusing art with activism. We challenged some of South America's most talented young musicians to create an original piece of music inspired by and using the song of an endangered bird from their country.

The result is a beautifully diverse and rich album of fresh new music, fusing electronica with natural sound, folkloric rhythms with modern-synthesisers and precious singing with rich instrumentation. Each song tells a story and paints a picture of these magnificent birds.

Using music as a tool for change, 'A Guide to the Birdsong of South America' aims to raise awareness about the plight of these beautiful but threatened species, many of which are on the edge of extinction. It will also raise funds for those working to protect them. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Ecuadorian birding organisations Aves y Conservación and Fundación Jocotoco, two non-governmental organisations with the aim of ensuring the survival of birds and their vital habitat in Ecuador, one of the most rich countries for biodiversity in the world.

The album will be released digitally and on vinyl in March 2015 via Rhythm and Roots. It will be accompanied by a series of one-off illustrations and post-cards from the American designer Scott Partridge.

Australia's Tarkine region of northwest Tasmania contains the largest expanse of temperate rainforest in the southern hemisphere.

Here, hidden deep in river valleys and wild uplands, huge myrtle trees are festooned with epiphytes and mosses, and in their cool shade thrive an understory of tree ferns. These forests are ancient - they once covered the whole of Australia, and date as far back as the time of the dinosaurs and the primordial supercontinent of Gondwana.

Sadly, this region is under imminent threat of mining. There are currently 11 applications for large, open-cut developments pending, which the Australian government seems intent upon passing regardless of any environmental or social consequences.

Hence we've made this album freely available, so you can hear the wild voices of the Tarkine speak for themselves, and get a sense of what is at stake.
