Tezcatlipoca (tɛzˌkætliˈpoʊkə) was a central deity in Aztec religion. One of the four sons of Ometeotl, he is associated with a wide range of concepts; including the night sky, the night winds, hurricanes, the north, the earth, obsidian, enmity, discord, rulership, divination, temptation, jaguars, sorcery, beauty, war and strife. His name in the Nahuatl language is often translated as "Smoking Mirror" and alludes to his connection to obsidian, the material from which mirrors were made in Mesoamerica, used for shamanic rituals and prophecies.
When depicted, he was usually drawn with a black and a yellow stripe painted across his face. He is often shown with his right foot replaced with an obsidian mirror, bone, or a snake—an allusion to the creation myth in which he loses his foot battling with the Earth Monster. Sometimes the mirror was shown on his chest, and sometimes smoke would emanate from the mirror. Tezcatlipoca's nagual, his animal counterpart, was the jaguar and his jaguar aspect was the deity Tepeyollotl ("Mountainheart").

After the Sun and the Moon, Venus is the brightest star in the sky, so Aztec astronomers also followed its synodic periods. Venus is depicted in both anthropomorphic and symbolic manner in pictorial manuscripts. Its aspects, Morning Star and Evening Star, were worshipped by the Aztecs. Furthermore, they associated Venus with the god who guided the dead to the underworld since it is not visible for about 58 days when it is behind the Sun (50 days) or in front of the Sun (eight days).

While the indigenous cultures of ancient Mexico spoke separate languages, lived in different environments and operated uniquely as societies, the importance of animals found in their environments is a common thread. Nearly all Pre-Hispanic cultures applied powers to animals, creating mystic deities that oversaw aspects of their lives.
One of the most highly recognized examples is Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent worshipped throughout Mexico, Central and South America for millennia. 

Quetzalcoatl was considered the god of learning, science, agriculture, crafts and the arts.

For many centuries, the indigenous people who lived in Mexican territory had shown a profound devotion and respect for the Sun: the most powerful star had a notable influence on the social organization of people at that time.
One of the simplest and earliest of the Sun adoration rituals was, according to the experts, that of the primitive hunters, who offered it the first pieces of meat-torn from the animals that, with great effort, they had captured.

Later, with the development of agriculture and the subsequent unfolding of Mesoamerican civilizations, the Sun's warmth and its veneration became intertwined
with the cult of rain and water.

The Earth, hostile during the dry season, became fertile and prodigious with rain and Sun. That is why great ceremonies were organized on the equinoxes: to celebrate these changes in the Universe.
