Annie Lennox has captivated many hearts with her soulful and expressive voice, as well as her unique sense of fashion. It's only natural that she has won many honors in her long and storied career. In the '90s, she parted ways with the Eurythmics and reinvented herself as a solo artist, fueling her wild success with a series of inventive and memorable music videos. When I was a little kid, I imagined her as some sort of ageless vampire noblewoman who threw lavish parties at her grand palace on the misty Scottish moors, and invited all her famous musician friends. This mashup is what one of these theoretical parties might sound like.

I love the dreamy track you hear in Super Mario Land on the GameBoy. So I took a .MIDI file, applied a music box VST to it in REAPER, maybe added some reverb, and got the music box version.

Now all I want is an actual real music box that plays this tune.

Mario’s first-ever adventure on a portable system has a great soundtrack, but its final world, Chai Kingdom, features an example of a certain melody that has long been a shorthand for all manner of Asian cultures, accurately or not. This episode — which is one where Drew talks a lot, you should probably know — explores where this nine-note structure came from and how we should regard it now that we know it’s a bunch of malarkey. But what VGM is actually authentic to the culture it is referencing?

Metroid (1986) and Metroid Prime

The Metroid series is probably 2nd favorite video game franchise from Nintendo (the first being The Legend of Zelda). I always wanted to arrange this tune but held back because I didn't know how to approach it. The best arrangement I've heard of this tune was from Metroid Metal (Stemage) years ago. I wanted to avoid doing a "metal" version because there are already so many metal covers of Metroid (and other games) and Stemage did it best. I was hit with inspiration while listening to Sigur Ros' "Takk" (always loved the sound of that album) during rush hour here in LA, Cali. The rest fell into place.
