Here's one of the 25 songs from the Leap's Learning Band. Think "Yakko's World" or Homer doing the Mexican Hat Dance around his phone.

"Jarabe tapatío", often referred to as the "Mexican Hat Dance" (not to be confused with the other title "La Raspa") is a popular Mexican dance, also being well-known in other countries such as Cuba, Peru, and the Dominican Republic, that has come to symbolize Latin America both domestically and internationally. The standard tune was composed by Jesús González Rubio in the 19th century. However, its more common instrumental arrangement dates from the 1920s. Sometimes it is confused with La Raspa, another Mexican dance. Nowadays, its music is most commonly performed by either mariachi groups or string ensembles.

Leap's Learning Band - Mexican Hat Dance (Jarape Tapatio)

Here's one of the 25 songs from the Leap's Learning Band. This one is also used in Learning Drum, with the same arrangements but original recordings, but here is THAT ONE with the Leap-font. Why? That music is the most overrated and well known classical piece out of all 3 used in the Learning Drum -- and here as the most well-known classical piece in all 25 songs. Also, this is actually another of my 3 favorite songs in this toy among many others. LEARNING DRUM, ANYBODY?!

Eine kleine Nachtmusik (Serenade No. 13 for strings in G major), K. 525, is a 1787 composition for a chamber ensemble by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). The German title means "a little night music". The work is written for string orchestra. Today, the serenade is widely performed and recorded; indeed, both Jacobson and Hildesheimer opine that the serenade is the most popular of all Mozart's works.

This first movement is in sonata-allegro form. It opens with an ascending Mannheim rocket theme. The second theme is more graceful and in D major, the dominant key of G major. The exposition closes in D major and is repeated. The development section begins on D major and touches on D minor and C major before the work returns to G major for the recapitulation.

In this version, we only hear the first theme as we all know it.

Leap's Learning Band - Mozart's Night Music

Here's one of the 25 songs from the Leap's Learning Band. This is one of the songs I used to sing with my kindergarten friends as a girl, and when I heard this version, it made me grin.

Ring Around the Rosie is a traditional nursery rhyme, folk song and playground singing game. Descriptions first emerge in the mid-19th century, but are reported as dating from decades before, and similar rhymes are known from across Europe. It has a Roud Folk Song Index number of 7925.

The lyrics vary, but a modern interpretation based on modern lyrics that related the words to the plague in England became widespread post-WWII, even though it appears to be a false folk etymology.

They established a temporary hub deep in the catacombs of the urban ultrascape, a sanctuary far from the eyes of the flesh-wrapped bio species of this technologically primitive planet. They were the last few of what was supposed to have been a peaceful incursion, an optimistic greeting between species that now stood as a declaration of violence written in the broken shards of their fallen brothers. As the chaos had blossomed around them and the incident unfurled its catastrophic and unstoppable cycle of causal probabilities and terminal results, they watched as their speaker was torn apart by the masses that pushed in against their number. Its limbs were ripped from its body each in turn, flailing and spilling hydraulic fluid as it twisted, reaching out to choke fragile throats as those merciless hands destroyed the beings they viewed as abominations. They managed to retrieve what was left of the body, separated and broken, but its heart and brain intact. Now in their refuge, with a click the last component slipped into place, its eyes flickered into life and its hand closed tight, its first thought - of death – the need to squeeze the life out of those fragile frightened masses.

1988 - I was approached by an old acquaintance of mine to assemble a bunch of Edinburgh musos for a session with the then up-and-coming Malian guitar star Ali Farka Touré (who went on to Grammy-winning fame with Ry Cooder on the album Talking Timbuktu). We had approximately 4 hours to put a band together. This track comes from the 90min gig we did at The Moray House Students' Union in Edinburgh. None of us had heard him before (or really heard of him, in fact!) so we didn't know what to expect - nor did he!

The line-up on this occasion consisted of 3 guys I'd called on many times before (Dave McNiven on electronic keyboard; Kenny Ellis on bass guitar; Mike Travis on drums) plus the multi-talented Jim Sutherland on percussion, and myself on electric guitar along with Ali on guitar and vocals, and Roger Cissé on calabash.

Dave McNiven's history included writing many musical productions for the 7:84 and Wildcat theatre groups, and all the incidental/theme music for the many BBC Scotland comedy shows being produced in the 80s and 90s. He played piano with me on many occasions; likewise I played on most of the TV work written and produced by him.
Apparently Ali liked his copy of the tape from this gig (it was recorded on multitrack and mixed by ex-Abbey Road Studios engineer, Claude Harper @ Leapfrog Mobile) so much that he carried it around with him for several years afterwards! Our keyboardist Dave went to see him at an Edinburgh gig 2 years or so later and Ali produced the tape from his jacket pocket!

We heard much later that this session was what inspired Ali to make the recording with Ry Cooder. I'd like to think that's true! If you like this track, please leave a comment - we'd love to hear from you!

Born into the reputed aristocratic family of Malsisar, Shekhawati, Rajasthan she aspired to accomplish a creative modification to Rajasthani Royal folk music. Rajnigandha’s childhood experiences enabled her to quickly adapt to musical techniques exhibited by the traditional folk singers who were patronized by her family.
