In today’s episode we talk with author, professor, and activist Ashley Dawson about the neoliberal city in the context of climate change and the liberatory potential inherent in community solar energy projects. The first half of the episode follows our guest’s book, Extreme Cities. The discussion starts from observations on the usual scale of reporting and perception of climate change – global or national, but not the urban scale. We talk about how large climate projects are often designed with planned obsolescence in mind, and first of all serve the interests of the elites; about the unequal impact of climate change and how communities often respond through what Ashely calls disaster communism; and about community solar energy as an example of such a collective (preventive in this case) response in the face of crisis. The second half of the ep. is based on Ashley’s book, People’s Power, and makes a case for community managed solar energy projects as a progressive tool through which to tackle the issue of energy poverty and the looming climate apocalypse. The topics that we cover include the solar commons as an analytical and discursive tool, issues of accessibility  (financial, technological etc) surrounding solar projects, and reflections on how the state fits into the picture.

Ep. 032 — Struggle in Western Sahara: (p1) Betrayals and Colonial Plunder /w Jamal [EN]

In today’s episode we sit down and talk with Benedik Kern, about the asylum system in Germany and the EU. Our guest tells us about the work that his organization is doing organizing so-called “church asylums” and “citizen asylums”, wherein churches and individual citizens offer safe places for people avoiding the Dublin system to hide from authorities. The main topic of the discussion is the coming change in the EU asylum system. It entails the outsourcing of the entire asylum procedure outside the EU, to camps in bordering countries that are considered safe. With this, there will be no more asylum procedure within the EU borders per se, fundamentally changing the whole movement landscape. The new law first has to be voted in the EU parliament and then implemented by individual countries in their national legal system, thus taking some years to come into effect. We talk with Benedikt about ways we can fight the consolidation of Fortress Europe, and how this must necessarily entail at least regional cooperation between groups and movements.

In today’s episode we talk with activist Sinan from the organization Climaximo about organizing during and against accelerating climate change. We start the conversation by describing some of the principle that our political work is based upon, in particular that the real risk of climate collapse is underrepresented and that the capitalist class will always resist any meaningful structural change. Then we talk about Climaximo, their mode of organizing and plans for the future. Sinan explains to us how they operate under the assumption of a state of climate emergency and their effort to frame climate change as a war waged by the capitalist class against the rest of the world. We finish with some book recommendations and a call to get organized.

In today’s episode we talk with Mixael from the Four Thieves Vinegar Collective about fighting against the medical-industrial complex by creating your own DIY medicine. In the first part we discuss US patent law that permits for-profit pharmaceutical companies to put huge precise-tags on life-saving medicines, like insulin and hepatitis C treatment. Millions of people die yearly as a consequence. We then learn about the tools developed by Four Thieves that help anyone with a very basic knowledge of chemistry produce these medications with a fraction of the cost. We end the episode by discussing some of the broader social impacts of these tools, touching on aspects of safety, legality and freedom of choice.

În episodul de azi vorbim cu R și M, doi membrx ai colectivului care organizează Piața Autonomă Cluj (PAC). În prima pare invitatx ne descriu principiile de autoorganizare, ajutor reciproc și antimilitarizare care stau la baza acțiunilor de tip Food Not Bomb (FNB). PAC-ul este o extensie al FNB, prin faptul că pe lângă distribuirea de mâncare se organizează și activități conexe: un schimb de haine, ateliere, cursuri de limbă etc, toate oferite gratis. A doua parte a discuției se axează pe detaliile logistice a modului în care se organizează colectivul, cu speranța că aceste informații să ajute și alte grupuri în a organiza FNB sau piețe autonome în orașele lor.
