Let me get this out of the way, this song is based on a true story.  It involves a real person who I care a lot about, despite not being able to show that the way she'd wish I could.  We spent a few weeks in a special summer thinking that maybe we could be something--and I guess we found out that we couldn't--at least with me being less than the ideal version of me.  She broke my heart and I broke her heart, and we haven't talked in years.  

And normally I'd worry that she might take offense to her being the subject of this latest Interbay track, but I know for a fact that she doesn't listen to them (I once sent her a song that meant a lot to me and she told me with surprising venom that she was not going to listen to it.)  

But, I'd like to think that if she did hear this song that she would understand that it is meant to express my admiration, my regret, my fondest wishes, and my wanting to rewrite history to change whatever I could so it didn't end up the way it did.  

In looking for a thumbnail image from that summer, I'm struck by how happy we were--each of us believing that something unexpected was happening and that we could help each other out of the situations we were in.  

I want everyone to like me, especially the people that I care about.  This is one of a few situations where I would love to try to fix things--not expecting a full do over, but at least allow us to talk to each other again...  But I've been told by so many people I trust that it might be kinder to both of us to let things be--which is not something I've ever been comfortable doing.  

The last thing she said to me was that she couldn't take this anymore...and I believed her, and I made a tough decision to not try to fix the boat.  If interacting with me hurt more than it helped, the best thing I could do for someone I still care about is to stay away.  

This track started out as a simple piano track, but the vibe of the whole track turned when I added some pedal steel guitar, for the first time ever in an Interbay track.  It is still a weird synth and effects laden Interbay track, because of course it is...but not only does the pedal steel bring a nostalgic and melancholy feel to the track, it fits the subject...who is a country gal through and through and when I picture her...I do so on a sundappled summer afternoon on her mom's farm, looking perfectly comfortable in every way.  

This might be the exact time I'd go back to if I could--to get the chance to do better.  

I complain about how isolated and lonely I've been after my wife died and I retired--but someone did want to be part of my life...even if sparks didn't fly for her the way we both wanted them to, and I somehow managed to botch that up.  

But I treasure the time where we tried.  (And I should have sung this one--perhaps I'll revisit this in some point and replace the vocals on this with my own.  I guess I botched this yet again.)

Sometimes people wonder, does what's happening around you influence the music of Interbay?  

The obvious answer would be "Duhh" (apologies to Billie Eilish there.)  But this is a good manifestation of that.  

What did I do today?  Today, I spent the day trying to take care of things before an upcoming trip...while having NFL RedZone on all day (it is still on, actually.)  And here you have a club dance track that, for no apparent reason, has big symphonic brass show up, amidst the drum machines and the synths.  

I think that the spirit of NFL Films, of John Facenda and "The frozen tundra" and all that, directed me towards adding in those epic brass parts...like old NFL VHS tapes would have had.  

So, what do the brass parts have to do with modern love coexisting with technology advancements (what most of the lyrics are about) or the color ultraviolent (which is repeated throughout the song.)?  

That, I can't answer.  Not because I won't--because I can't.  It is just what brain decided was a bloody good idea on a gloomy (aka typical) Seattle November Sunday.  

Now, will YOU like it?  I certainly hope so.  It's a bit odd...but it is definitely very much Interbay (and some of you seem to like the madness that is Interbay.)  

Still, I worry...because yesterday I posted a track I was sure you'd like.  "Graced By Your Presence" is a song that is personal to me and one where I spent some extra time on to make it as good as it can be.  (I do think that another run through of this song with live sung vocals would be better--and I will try to do that at some point.)  

Well, everyone that listened to it DID like it!  The problem is, according to the stats, only five people listened to it.  (5 listens, 5 likes--I should be proud of that...but I just want these songs to get the chance to find their way into the ears of people who might like them, if they heard them.)  

So, I'm going to ask that you listen to today's track, "Ultraviolet"--it's a bit strange but, in a strange way, I think it works!  Like it if you do.  Then, if you're not one of the five people already, I'm going to ask that you check out yesterday's track, "Graced By Your Presence"--give THAT track a listen and a like. Spend a bewildering few minutes with Interbay this Monday morning with another Rethink, Remake, Remix of a track that originally debuted on Facebook.  In its original form, this track was Experiment 52--but now, with the updates and revisions that the RRR process brings to these tracks, it becomes an "Xpansion Xperience."

So, enjoy this trip.  And it IS a trip.  

This is the soundtrack for suddenly realizing that the walls have started to move and the faces of those around you don't look quite right.  Colors seem more vivid, so much so you feel like you can smell the color green and you can taste the color pink.  

It is strange, but it is beautiful.  And you just get past the point of being frightened so you can appreciate this expanded consciousness when the dusty old record needle gets to the inner groove and the tone arm lifts on its own and returns to its off record position, and the record player shuts off...bringing you back to this world...where everything is so depressingly normal.  

(This is how someone who has never done any psychedelics imagines what it would be like...in music.)  

The video that originally accompanied this experiment when it was posted on Facebook back in 2023, included lots of scenes of San Francisco in the late 60s and early 70s, hanging with the freaks in the Haight Ashbury neigborhood...driving around the city at night.  It helped the track provide a dreamy vibe, like you were floating around in time.  

The music does that too...while much of the track is dominated by a heavily effect-laden guitar riff, you will occasionally drift into some double bass driven, brushes on the kit, jazzy blues...and other times, just the hint of modern dance music seems to blend into whatever journey to the past we may have thought we were on...  

...and all lthe time, you hear someone singing "woo woo"s.  (That almost became the name I gave this track after putting it through the RRR wringer--so, as cringe as Xpansion Xperience might seem...it could have been "Woo Woo." )

I'm a little worried about this track because it isn't the typical blend of post-punk and modern electronic dance music that most Interbay tracks end up being--but I think it still fits within the parameters of what Interbay can be.  

If you disagree, you might need to expand your consciousness.  

Not necessarily experienced, but mutated.  

This is one of the RRR mixes where not a lot has changed from Experiment to SoundCloud.  Some additional vocal elements, a slightly rearranged structure, and a new mix and master.  

So, take a short trip into time and space with "Xpansion Xperience" from Interbay.

Oh, dear...Interbay's dropped another political track.  And yet, it is funky as all hell.

Who knew you could do that?  

Greetings from Orange County, California.  I've packed up the Phantom Laboratories Mobile Unit and headed to sunnier climes for this holiday week.  But, before that mysterious blazing orb in the sky refreshes me with its Vitamin D...I'm dropping a recently finished track, featuring samples of a current events nature.  

It always tickles me whenever I can take a serious topic and make something that is funky and emminently danceable--and I think I've done so here.  

The only way to find out if you agree with me is to listen--and then give it a like, if you do.  It feels like, lately, I base a good deal of my personal happiness to the metrics of listens and likes, so you MIGHT be creating a monster by pumping those numbers up!  

You certainly can also leave a comment on this page, you can add it to a playlist.  You could repost this track or you could share it.  

Most of all--because, despite traveling from one corner of the contiguous 48 states to another, I'm still managing to keep this consistent schedule of dropping one Interbay track on every day, consecutively, for 560 straight days.  (And when you add in the 140 tracks posted to Facebook--that means that Intergbay has dropped 700 songs ni less than three years.  (And I think that's both pretty cool...and me making up for lost time!)  

I do sollumly square that I will continue this plan as long as I can--possibly, 'til death do us part.  (We'll see!)

"Oath" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

"Deep in the water since he young and knew how to swim."  

Sometimes, what you need is some perspective to see options that you might not have even known you'd had the entire time.  That's the story of "Boulevard"--at least from the production side of things.  

I've been working on a song called "Knives" for well over a year.  I was stuck.  I couldn't figure out the right way to put so many different pieces together.  I'd work on it.  Get frustrated.  Save it as is and move on to work on other things.  And then I'd come back to it and the pattern would repeat.  

So, I was resigned to likely defeat when I opened "Knives" up a couple of days ago--and, I will admit that "Knives" is STILL not finished.  But, it wasn't defeat because what I finally noticed is that the reason I was having problems piecing "Knives" together is that it was actually (at least) two separate songs with nothing directly liking them together.  So when I took a suction tube and scooped out the parts that I thought belonged with "Knives", I took what remained and turned it into "Boulevard"--which is the track that Interbay drops today.  

...and it already feels like "Knives" will be a lot easier to finish now that I've chipped away the parts that weren't "Knives" from the marble.   (The only thing that will probably show up in "Knives" that is here in "Boulevard" is the opening vocal snippet.  And that is the appropriate reaction to having just seen Sex Bob-Omb for the first time.  (And the speaker is absolutely too cool for them all--well, maybe not Kim.  Kim will always be cool.)

I mean, they're not even the same kind of songs--"Boulevard" clearly wanted to be uptempo whereas my idea for "Knives" wasn't tied to any pre-conceived tempo.  Even for Drum & Bass, I think "Boulevard" is plenty quick.  Almost gives it a new wave type of feel, more than a deep D&B presentation.  (And I'm fine with that, as you probably have already guessed.)  

I don't do a lot of drum & bass, but it is fun to play with the toys found in that playground.  The reese, the neuro, the subby 808s, the sped-up rap samples, the half-time rap samples.  But then again, there's also a lot of Interbay madness here.  The indie rock/post-punk guitars?  The odd off-time beat switch for those 808s (would definitely break some ankles if you didn't know it was coming!)  The addition of the segments of color bass was part of what I'd meant for "Knives"--but it certainly works here in "Boulevard" even better.  

BONUS INTERBAY POINTS if you can tell the specific Boulevard shown in the thumbnail!  

It is a nice and bright sunny day here in Southern California (you could have guessed that) so I'm going to push myself away from the Phantom Laboratories Mobile Unit and go exploring.  (We're going to try to get to Golf Wang--the clothing/lifestyle store by Tyler The Creator--and who knows what else?)

"Boulevard" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

In America, thanksgiving means three things.  

First, it is a day where we give thanks for our many blessings.  (Of course, there is irony as it commemorates a day where we were welcomed...and then for the next few hundred years, the people who welcomed us were driven further and further off of what had been their land.  There are many things that Americans aren't especially proud of, but...until recently...we'd always comforted ourselves that we were always trying to get better.)  

Second, it is a day of feasting.  Rather obscene amounts of food is prepared and devoured...often centered around a stuffed turkey, all manners of sides and "fixings", plus a surplus of desserts.  If one has the means to do this meal right, it is truly awe inspiring.  

Third, it is a day for NFL football...but strangely, not a day for WATCHING NFL football.  No, if you've had turkey...or if you're just stuffed to your body's maximum capacity with whatever else was offered you...you WILL fall asleep...and the games scheduled for this day will just run, unwatched...and leading to many odd dreams.  

This isn't a bug, it is a feature.

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that can cause drowsiness...and it is found in turkey meat.  

"Tryptophan" is also the name of today's Interbay track here on SoundCloud...a trip hop (or is it trypthop?) ode to this fine American tradition of thanking, eating, and sleeping.  

As I am far away from home (but still with access to the Phantom Laboratories West Mobile Unit), I'm not having a traditional American Thanksgiving.  I had cinnamon roll pop tarts for breakfast, I watched the entire Green Bay Packers vs Detroit Lions game (Go Pack Go!) and my kid and I have no further plans for the day.  Not even sure what we have available to us for lunch or dinner, as many places are closed for the holiday.  

I'm sure we won't starve, but I do miss the big family Thanksgivings.  What I wouldn't give for some serious carb loading--stuffing, mashed potatoes w/gravy, dinner rolls, creamed corn, sweet potatoes with marshmallows (yes, that IS a thing) and cranberry sauce.  I tended to have ham not turkey, growing up, but my late wife's family insisted that it could ONLY be turkey when they hosted.  

I remember, we used to invite out of town finalists in the Seattle comedy competition I helped run for many years to my in laws' for Thanksgiving...and, for many, it was one of the highlights of their time in our (damp) neck of the woods.  

So, as I look out on the far more pleasant California sun, I am thankful for my memories of good times that feel like they're fading further into the past.  But they're not gone...

"Tryptophan" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

(Perhaps numbers were down because of yesterday's holiday--but I think "Tryptophan", the Interbay track that dropped yesterday, deserves more ears.  So, give that a listen, please, if you haven't already.  If you like it, give it a like.  THEN come back here and check out this track!  Thanks!)  

You might not recognize this track because it FEELS busy...but this is one of the most minimal tracks that Interbay has ever made.  There are four instruments--a drum machine and three synths.  And there's one female vocalist, singing ethereally--but mostly repeating certain phrases.  

(I know that some of you like the songs where I manage to work in actually sung vocals, rather than the spoken words or dialogue snippets that I often use for a song's mandatory "vocal element."  Well, this is one of those!  Check it out!)  

At 116bpm, "How Does This Feel?" isn't slow...but it is slower than the vast majority of Interbay tracks (don't check my math on that--that's a guesstimate.)  The sound is digifunk--digital and digital sounding elements making funk music.  Or this old white man's approximation of funk--perhaps less George Clinton and more Bill Clinton?  (It's a fair cop.)  

Too fast to be chill, too slow to fill the big rooms--this track is more selective in its appeal.  You've got to like it when various effects are slapped onto the drums, giving it a technological psychedelic feel.  Like, what might the laptop computer equivalent to LSD?  Whatever THAT is...then that!  

The vocals are simple, direct, and heart breaking.  She can't find the way.  (What way?)  The way to describe how does this feel.  And, finally, at the end, she finds the perfect word to sum up how this DOES feel.  (Spoilers, sweetie!)  

I had another track in mind to drop today, but when I opened this up and found how close I'd been to finishing this track whenever it was when I'd put it aside, I knew that I had to get this one polished and off the lot.  Sometimes, you just get a certain "now" vibe from a track--and this one is that.  (Despite it being heavily rooted in some 80s vibes.)  

So--like yesterday's "Tryptophan"...I can only ask that you give "How Does This Feel? (Can't Find The Way)" a listen and a like, if you do.  If you want to, you could repost it or share it with a friend (or more.)  You could add it to a playlist that is missing some digifunk spark.  You could leave a comment--though, I will say, I much prefer the encouraging ones!  And, perhaps most importantly, consider giving this page a follow. Today is a traveling day for the Phantom Laboratories West crew--we've packed up the mobile unit and we'll be leaving the sunny and warm California to return to...well, you can probably guess what Seattle will be like when we get back.  

So, why not a song about traveling--or, at least...dreaming about traveling.  That's the title of the latest Interbay drop--and uptempo hard house w/lo-fi urges and a woman telling a story about her own dreams.  

Perfect for a Saturday, perfect for getting you moving, and keeping you moving--"Dreaming About Traveling" is a solid entry into the ever expanding catalogue of Interbay songs posted here on SoundCloud.  It is a little dreamy and a little noisy...and when the beat switch happens right as the song comes to a complete stop at the end of the line, you do feel like you've been on a journey.  

And as they're calling our flight, you'll have to accept an Interbay song description that is barely half the length they normally are.  I think you can handle that!  :)

Ever go on vacation, come home, and your body says "OK, enough of those good feelings.  Now, you're sick!"  

Just me?  

I was having a sore throat in Southern California...but back in the Pacific Northwest, and I'm trying my best to stay hopped up on DayQuil...but I feel miserable.  Blech.  

Perhaps that's why I pulled this off the shelves in The Vault to share today?  A simple pop song with sung vocals, drum machines and synths--for all of the times that people complain about Interbay songs ending up like prog rock epics (only without the virtuosity, this proves occasionally, I can stick to the point.)  

The whole idea of a "Last Goodbye" is classic teenage melodrama (and as miserable as I feel, I fully intend on posting Interbay music everyday for the forseeable future).  The Icarus threatening verse vocals were always on the overly dramatic edge, and so they felt perfect for my purposes.  

I'm going to leave it here (please do not wish that my feeling awful continues just so you get shorter song descriptions, that would be cruel) and hope that tomorrow, I'll be feeling a little better.

"Last Goodbye" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Hello and welcome to another Monday!  Time for another Rethink, Remake, Remix of an earlier Interbay track that was posted to Facebook, before Interbay tracks started dropping EVERY SINGLE DAY (so far!) here on Soundcloud.  These tracks all came out from January 2023 through May 2024.  And, what I've done is...I've given them a rethink, I've used my (hopefully) increased music production skills to remake it, and, if all else fails, a good remix will do nicely!  

Sometimes these songs are radically transformed through the RRR process--but today is not one of those times.  "I Surround You" was known as Experiment 110 when posted on the Interbay music project Facebook page (where you can still see nearly all of the 140 tracks posted there, 130 songs and 10 alternate versions, in the Reels tab.  That was the the thing with the Interbay experiments posted to Facebook, each one had their own music video (granted, some involved more effort than others).  

I think you'd find that "I Surround You" and "Experiment 110" are very similar.  I did not do a lot in the RRR process--there's an over all remix, a few sounds and effects were changed, one brand new keyboard was added...that's about it.  

Oh...I did make it louder.  To the point of almost being silly--it is so overdriven, it's like you're right there on a cold Wisconsin winter night in a heating company's warehouse in 1986...where everybody's got their amps turned all the way up as they try to find their sound in all of the noise.  

Like The Jesus and Mary Chain, "I Surround You" dares you to sift through the chaos to find the sweetness buried under the noise.  Get lost in the seemly random and fractal-like nature of the distortion and find beauty there.  

Or, if you're like me, masochistically listen the the pounding and throbbing and the sharp shards of broken glass that might once have been electric guitar chords, while curled up under a blanket on your couch, because you've been sick since Thursday night...and you may be expressing your unwell feelings in your creative pursuits.  

(Hopefully not the last one!  I'll be fine--a bit phegmatic at the moment, but I'm pretty sure this isn't serious, just annoying.  I've managed to generally avoid being sick for years now.)  

I'm not going to predict the response to this latest Interbay track.  I know there are fans of shoegaze here on SoundCloud, but I'm not certain that they are listening to Interbay.  Fans of the synth-based Interbay stuff, though there are a few synths on here, may be confused why this droning noise thing is coming from the same account that dropped "Last Goodbye" yesterday--that's fair.  

But, I've predicted doom in the past and been astonished when a track finds an audience I didn't know it was there (just as often, I'd been confident that I'd made something that people would really like, only to watch it fall completely on its face.)  

So, I'll just hope that as many people as possible (starting with you!) listen to this track, give it a like if you do, repost it, share it, add it to a playlist, leave a comment on it.  Most of all, please follow this page--because there's new Interbay every day!  

PS--There is a part in this song where either my laptop or one of the plugins I was using just...gives up.  Instead of playing what it was directed to play, the circuits all started to melt and some atonal noise takes over, at least for a little while.  I think it is telling that I didn't notice this until just now...and that I'm not taking this upload down, because...it kind of works with the vibe of the whole thing.
