DISCLAIMER:  Despite the title and the thumbnail, this track has nothing to do with Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (sorry to all of the Twiki and Dr. Themopolis fans out there, I didn't mean to clickbait you with this.)  

No, this track is about the Space Race--and specifically, those seven Americans who proved they have "The Right Stuff."  (If Icarus wasn't already dead..that might have done it right there.)  What you're hearing is the moment when Gordo and Gus and John and Wally and Alan and Deke and Scott get to see the Mercury capsule for the first time--brought out by Werner Von Braun and his team of captured German scientists.  

...and they realize that instead of being test pilots (much less Astronauts), they're just human test subjects...another monkey shot into space to see if they'll live long enough to return to Earth.    

They know this, because there's no window (much less a hatch with explosive bolts.)  They would have no agency--they would be passengers...sightseers (except for the fact that there's no window.)  This does not sit well with any of them.  

AND what better way to accompany this fateful moment than with a Moroder-y/New Order "Blue Monday"-esque new wave, disco, synthesizer, dance track...with nearly speed garage bass and the occasional neuro sound?  I can't think of any...so...THUS.  

This is classic Interbay.  A dance song with dialogue snippets--that's probably 70% of what all Interbay tracks (so far) have been.

"Buck Rogers" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

I may have gotten a bit too cutesy with the name of this track (which, honestly, I could see more people calling it "Electricity" than the acronym for the four shock factors invovled with a person coming in contact with live electrical lines.)

It's not the first time that an Interbay track has had a track title that wasn't actually made of words.  There was "MCT" (the vocal sample was about "Mind Control Technology"), there was "PLAW" (the vocal sample was from Hank Green talking about how cars look like putty now...and "PLAW" stood for "Putty Lookin' Ass Whip" which is a phrase that Hank found online and repeated in a vlogbrothers post that sounded really funny coming from him), and there was "A Zed 5" (which was the label on the SCRAM button in Russian nuclear reactors and, due to design errors, bad management, and low standards--the hitting of that AZ5 button is seen as the instigating moment causing the explosion at Chernobyl.)  

By the way--"PLAW" and "A Zed 5" are both definitely underviewed and underrated tracks.  Two of my best rockers--they deserve more love...so, when you're done with "VRPD", maybe go deep into the catalog and check those out?

The inspiration for this is simple...a Canadian hydro company put out a public service announcement regarding the dangers of mishandling electrical lines and equipment...and I love to incorporate samples that combine "danger" and "science" (or technology.)  

This is actually re-arranged version of a track that was intended for getting a video made for it so it could be posted on Facebook.  When I decided to switch to posting audio-only tracks here on Facebook, I stuffed into the Vault.  I dragged it back out and thought it needed more dynamics and a bit more heft as well.  I wrote some new parts, I used some new soft synths (thank you Black Friday deals!), and I found ways to put in more pauses for the drama and engagement.  (This pushed it slightly past the 7 minute mark--but that's got to be better than the nearly 10 minutes that "Rain Soaked Streets" put you through, right?)  

There's certainly an electro feel here, even if the beats aren't quite as broken as you'd want from a proper electro track.  There may actually, even in this rework, be too much analog dirt in the lower frequencies...competing and clashing as they each expect your attention.  (I did split some of those synthbass parts in the stereospectrum--so, this might be a good one to listen to with headphones.  

(Still haven't finished the track I thought I'd post on Christmas Day...but, as today's track pproves, everything that gets put in the Vault eventually makes it way out.)

"VRPD"  *SoundCloud Exclusive*

FIRST--before even LISTENING to today's Interbay track, go check out YESTERDAY'S track!  Called "Say You Love Me"--it is a decent slice of jazzy electronic pop...and somehow everybody slept on it!  (I blame the algorithms!)  Seriously, it only has SIX (yes 6!!!) listens...which is VERY unexpected and unusual (by the end of the first day that a SoundCloud Exclusive Interbay track will typically have at least 100 listens, and often more.)  

It deserves to be heard (and liked!)  It certainly doesn't deserve to be so slept on--so, do me a favor and check that track out...and, when you're done, come back and check out TODAY'S Interbay track.  

...and, luckily, this won't take much time--as for the THIRD DAY IN A ROW (!?!?!), the Interbay track being posted is less than four minutes long!  This has never happened before (obviously, since TWO DAYS IN A ROW hadn't happened either.)  

Of course, I'm sure that epic length Interbay tracks are bound to be dropped soon...always.  

On to today's track.  How many listens do I think THIS track deserves by the end of 24 hours.  One million?  One billion?  One HUNDRED billion?  (Honestly, if YOU listen to this...and "Say You Love Me"...I'll be plenty happy--and thank you!)

This is officially the track with the longest song title in the Interbay catalog--especially notable because it doesn't include a parenthetical (like this would be.)  On top of that, SPOILER ALERT, the title doesn't really have anything to do with the song or the words.  There are no plane sound effects, no disguised voice instructions for the drop of the requested ransom money.  (Hope you're not terribly disappointed.)  

"Jumping From a Plane With a Bag Full of Ransom Money" (or "JFaPWaBFoRM" for (slightly) short) is a thicc bass'd house track with both female sung vocals and male spoken vocals of an unknown ethnicity.    

I opened up FL Studio with the intention of creating a massive sound--oppressive like the humid summer air on a Midwestern just afternoon.  I didn't know anything else--genre, tempo, key...nothing.  Just figured it out as I went.  I love having the freedom to just go where ever the  muse points.  

(Just checked--"Say You Love Me" is now at SEVEN listens.  It deserves more, I think.)  

Like "Quickly," from a couple of days ago, "JFaPWaBFoRM" pushes you back in your seat because all of the volume knobs are all the way up--and these go to eleven.  

It hits you in the face like a 2x4--but, like stepping into an unheated pool, it may take a little acclimation but it does become easier to listen to as the song goes on.  Sounds are flying all over the place and from side to side.  It is somehow both sweet and nasty, smooth and rough, out of control and well-mannered...all at the same time!  (How did I manage this?  I have no idea...it just turned out like this!)

My recommendation for you is much like Basil Exposition--I suggest that you don't worry about such things and enjoy yourself.  

Oh, and thank you Lorne Michaels...without you the cheeky movie snips wouldn't exist!

"Jumping From a Plane With a Bag Full of Ransom Money" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

It is rainy and very windy here in Seattle--lights have flickered, the tv rebooted, the door has shuddered a few times.  

So...the PERFECT time for a bright major key piano vocal house track!!!!  Right?  

I spent a lot of time chopping up some vocals and getting the piano part just right (and the reason it starts to fade out towards the end--despite the track having a cold ending) is because that piano got a bit manic.  

I use the term "mutant pop" to describe what Interbay sounds like--but this time, truly, the emphasis is on the "pop" more than the mutant, when usually it's the other way around.  

This is being posted a bit later than usual (but still on the same day, even for those of you in the Eastern Time Zone.  The streak of posting a brand new, never-before-heard track here on SoundCloud EVERY SINGLE DAY (so far!) continues) because, as I said in the previous song's description, I got to listen to some Interbay tracks in the rental car I had while my car was in the shop (thank you, Bluetooth)...and too often, I noticed distortion in the mix on the car's speakers...distortion that I did not put there, and distortion that I did not hear when I finalized those  mixes...SO, I spent a little extra time, chasing distortion demons on this one.  

Wasn't easy--there's more going on than it might seem at first, and trying to blend and balance things was a challenge.  I would fix one thing and that would expose problems with another part.  (As I often say, I'm learning as I go, making my mistakes in public, so that one day, someday, I might be adequate enough of a music producer so I can translate what I hear in my head into what you could listen to here on SoundCloud.  

I mean, I would appreciate if you listened to what I'm already making, including "You Get Me"--and you could encourage me by giving it a like, reposting it, adding it to a playlist, sharing it with a friend, leaving a comment...and, if you're intrigued, give this page a follow and/or check out the back catalog...there's a lot to dig through and a lot to come!

"You Get Me" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Perhaps the best and the worst place to dance would be on an airport runway at night.  

It would be awesome--because you're dancing outside, because an airport has a bunch of lights (some of them even move around) and because an airport runway is loud.  And loud is good, right?  (Right?  Hello?  Are you answering me?  I'm sorry, I blew my ears out during 20+ years of being a nightclub dj...I've got permanent tinitus, so you'll have to speak up.)  

It would be awful because...well, planes would be taking off and landing right where you're dancing.  You could get run over (bad), you could get blasted into the air by jet wash (probably not as cool as it sounds like it would be), or you could sucked into a jet engine (which might be better than a wood chipper, but not by much.)  

I was always a club person--as a punter and as a dj.  I only went to one legitimate warehouse rave...and never got to go to any outdoor rave or illegal orbital parties.  So, I'm guessing what's in my head (visualized in the thumbnail for this latest Interbay track) likely isn't what it would actually be like.  (I would think that so many multicolored lights would be, at the very least, distracting for pilots.)  

Interbay is a curious thing.  For as much electronic music I make, for as much "dance" music I make...I don't really make much electronic dance music--not in the formulaic, consistent, somewhat cookie cutter-ish ways that seem to have been popular for the last 20 or so years.  (Most notably, after I'd stopped dj'ing--so, I could be completely wrong about this...but it's MY description, so I'll assume I'm right.  You can correct me with a comment.)  

Interbay songs lurch in unexpected directions, they don't build tension and then release that tension with an effective (and, too often, by the numbers) drop...  Honestly, Interbay songs, especially the dance oriented ones, fell more like a mix of various records in the style that I used to like to spin when I was dj'ing.  I wanted novelty, I wanted surprises, I wanted to smush all kinds of things together to keep everyone on their toes and entertained.  

(Perhaps the only thing that only rarely is included would be backspins.  Oh, I was known for dropping a bunch of backspins into my mixes...some might say "annoyingly so.")  

This track is still an Interbay track--clearly, they will always sound more like Interbay than anything (or anyone) else.  But, there are some choices made here that aren't typical for what I've been producing.  You get the vocal hook immediately.  You don't get any snares (until, possibly, the end...but certainly none where you'd expect me to have put snares.)  The vibe is minimal rather than the kitchen sink that most Interbay tracks tend to be.  

I like it.  I hope you do too!  Give it a listen.  Hell, give EVERY Interbay track a listen (might take you a few days--there's a deep back catalog here. ;) )

Also good?  Today's Interbay track.  Over 7 minutes of mayhem--a manic energy filled romp, skirting the edges of drum and bass and hard house.  Choppy edits, tons of processing, and a relentless push forward--this is the kind of dance music that still excites me.  

No rules.  Just everything...thrown into a blender...and hit puree.  

...and it is sealed with a kiss.  

Nothing to it but to do it--so give this track a listen (though, you may want to make sure you've got some THROAT LUBRICATION first...as. like the best rollercoasters of the world, this one is certainly prone to making people scream their silly little heads off.  

(And of course, it would be wonderful if you not only listened to this latest Interbay track, but also reposted it, shared it, added it to a playlist, commented on it...and if you could follow this page, that would be great too! Mercy (Speed Garage) W/ STRØWBERRY, ALEXYS, Strn.

A couple of days ago, I attended the monthly meeting for the Seattle Electronic Music Producers Association (SEMPA) for the first time.  The guest presenter for the evening was Jon Lee of Tilted Records.  And he showed us some of his work flow in creating a house track, worthy of club play or party play.  

It was my first time, really, interacting with anyone else in public about music production.  It was important, I thought, to get more involved with meat space--and not just live an isolated life connected to other people only through social media.  

My intention with this track was to see what would happen if I used Jon's workflow.  To see if a different process could lead to different results.  

yeeah...that worked for the first hour or so, and then I Interbayed all over the project.  (Naturally.)  

From the rate at which I produce and post music, you might guess that I work pretty fast and loose--and you'd be right.  I don't spend a lot of time agonizing over the specific snare sound that I need to use in a specific situation.  It can lead to wonderful randomness or complete messes that could be improved with a remix or sound substitution.  

From the word go, Jon had a better and more club worthy kick than I feel I've ever managed.  I don't know what his process was for determining what would work best--other than experience.  (I don't think it is better tools--but it certainly could be knowing more about how to use those tools.)  

For whatever reason, I hear "Jeopardized" and I think the kick or maybe the kick/bass combination, sounds too..."round" (that's the best way I can describe it) than what Jon anchored his demonstration track to...and that dissatisfaction with my own choices may have colored what decisions I made after making those choices.  

I guess you could say that I was in danger of jeopardizing my mission simply by working on it.  

...then I remembered.  This is an Interbay track.  There aren't any expectations, much less any rules.  It will be what it will be.  

Which will be Interbay.  

I did manage to keep my hands (mostly) off the vocal sample--letting it be the only one used and not to stutter edit it or to otherwise overload it with tricks, ear candy, and extreme effects.  (And I bet many of you recognize exactly where Icarus sourced it from...)  

This may be the "purest" I've ever managed to creating tech house.  We're not talking Ivory soap "pure"...but relative to the Interbay back catalog, I think I'm right.  

If yesterday's silliness wasn't to your taste, you might give "Jeopardized" a shot and find something more up your alley.  (...and yes, I do need to drop a post-punk or other rock/guitar-centric track soon.)  

Thanks to Jon, Mindy, and a couple of new friends I made that night.  If I haven't annoyed you too much, you should see and hear from me more often.

"Jeopardized" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

I did say that now that I completed the "one brand new track, every single day for a year" challenge that I might post more than one song on a given day and I might post songs that have either been posted elsewhere or they had been posted in a different form or format.  

For those of you who have been following this Interbay music project for that first year through now, you may have noticed that the counts of tracks I occasionally drop aren't always matching what SoundCloud tells you they should be.  That's because the track I posted on the second day (after posting "Cruncher" on the first day I posted a completed track here on SoundCloud--May 16, 2024), which was titled "Penultimate" isn't found in the Interbay back catalog here.  

That's because I pulled it down.  Because it wasn't any good.  (Yes, I do have standards.  Not terribly high standards, but they do exist.)    

The track was called "Penultimate" because the first 100 tracks had a conceit that all song titles would only be one word long AND because it was the second to last track I made at the original Phantom Laboratories West (the last track produced there, titled "Stock"--because my kid dared me to do a track with only stock plugins--still hasn't seen the light of day, and might stay in The Vault forever...if anything, it was somehow worse than "Penultimate".)  

I hadn't planned anything specific for posting here on SoundCloud yet--posting every day, one word titles, all tracks must include vocal elements, putting emphasis on simplicity and song structure--none of that were written in stone yet.  I was just as likely to be posting half-baked garbage that should remain as demo recordings for future ACTUAL songs.  

...and that's what "Penultimate" was.  

The most galling thing to me was that I'd used a classic Film Noir movie snippet...and it didn't fit the music...and I didn't do anything with it.  I just dropped it on the track and called it done.  Rip it and ship it.  

...and the day after I posted it, I regretted it...so, I took it down.  

I HAD posted it, so it counts as the track I posted on that day...even if you couldn't find it in the back catalog.  (Originally, I'd used this page to share my attempts in Eliminate's Audio Combat--one of which is still posted here, so it was less obvious that there was a track missing.)  

I have now retooled the song.  I chose a different snippet.  I did more with the structure, added more interesting melody lines and other arrangement changes...and now, I re-present the song that was "Penultimate" but is now "Penultimate Chase."  A better track and worthy of returning to the back catalog...and still different enough to count as a SoundCloud Exclusive.  

(After you listen to this, go and listen to today's earlier posted track "Northamerican Stomp".  It's a bit odd--but it deserves a listen, too!)

"Penultimate Chase" (rethink remix) *SoundCloud Exclusive*

(OK--lesson learned.  Don't release two tracks on the same day.  Understood.  I feel bad for "Northamerican Stomp," though--it sure looks like "Penultimate Chase" diverted attention from it, leaving it tragically unlistened to.  If you'd like to help make up for my mistake--and hubris--giving a listen to "Northamerican Stomp" after you check out TODAY's track.)  

Today's track (the only one I will release today, promise) is an intense thing.  (You see what I've done there, yes?)  Somewhat dark but definitely hard house track with movie snippets, obnoxious noises, brief glimpses of guitar and breakbeeat...but most of all, there's a galloping bass that could damage your speakers if you play this too loud.  (I dare you.  I also take no responsibility, after all I have warned you.)  

There is part of me that delights in doing the "wrong" thing.  Call it cheeky, call it devious, call it punk rock...but the fact that the bassline in this track is both subsonic deep and fast at the same time is proof that I've got the devil in me.  (When it comes to bass--you can go subsonic OR you can go fast, you're not supposed to do both.  ::cue Steve Austin flipping off the world::)  

Like many Interbay tracks, this came together rather quickly...and then got fiddled with until I  pushed myself away from the buffet.  The temporary project name for this was "driven"--which might have been a fine title that would have fit rather well with this track...but then I had an idea for what I might snag for a vocal element...  

...and that's why, now, we're living "In Tents".  

Things in this track are not stable--you think you've got a handle on what this track does...and then suddenly that synthesizer that sounded almost normal seemingly turns into the worst played theremin ever.  Are those trombones being tortured or is that yet another bassline?  

If you like the louder, noisier and decently paced (it feels faster than the 138bpm that FL Studio tells me it is...) Interbay tracks...here's one that should delight you.
