Welcome back to a new season of LSE IQ, where we work with academics to bring you their latest research and ideas.

In this episode, I’ll be asking What is it like to be an animal?  We’ll travel to the local park to find out how smart dogs are, we’ll hear about a campaign arguing that chimpanzees are animals deserving of their own rights and, finally, we’ll ask whether insects and other invertebrates have feelings.

This episode features Jonathan Birch, Associate Professor in LSE's Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method, Professor Kristin Andrews, the York Research Chair in Animal Minds at York University (Toronto) and Dr Rosalind Arden, Research Fellow at the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science.

Guigo thinks certain Dexter (shoutout) cast members have more "flair" in their names than others (in this order: David Zayas, Desmond Harrington, Jennifer Carpenter, Michael C. Hall), mentions Skiboring (which is, unfortunately, actually called Biathlon), and LOVES mountain lions and how they climb up cliffs like Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible II (shoutout). Nico gets brutally abused by Guigo for wanting jet propulsion like octopuses, teaches you proper cannibalism logic, and wants body hair like Angora wool.

Oh, and despite our joking, we are not liable for any car crashes.

What do bumblebees and octopuses have in common? They’re both invertebrates - or as Dr. Yan Wang says, “the shiny and squishy things.” And what makes them different? Well, beyond the obvious, octopuses are extremely anti-social, while  bumblebees depend on their societies to survive. In this episode, you’ll hear about Dr. Wang’s research on bees and how they get their roles in bee society plus a little about octopus cannibals. In the second half of the episode, Dr. Wang shares her perspective on the complex ways race and white supremacy interact in the university setting and beyond.
