Paul O'Brien, Executive Director of Amnesty International USA, talks about the human rights situation around the world as authoritarian regimes are becoming more emboldened. We also reflect on the challenges of organizing and being in coalition with activists whose backgrounds and identities differ from ours.  Amnesty International operates on several levels. Research is done through the International Secretariat in London and the regional sections. Deep research as well as press releases are frequently published. Recent lobbying efforts in the U.S. include the "Safeguarding Human Rights in Arms Exports Act." The organization is also grassroots, with student groups and local groups engaged in a wide range of activities, including letter-writing campaigns and events. Lastly, we reflect on 2024 being an important election year and how human rights could inform the discussions.

Paul O'Brien, who is the executive director of Amnesty International USA, talks about the erosion of rights around the world and the importance of ongoing human rights work. In recent years, authoritarian rulers have engaged in efforts to accumulate massive power, while getting rid of rules that would check it. In the United States, the politics of chaos and cruelty is centered on grabbing power and attacking people through the politics of othering. Freedom of speech has been significantly eroded. Globally, we have seen the rise of anti-immigrant sentiments in many countries but even in Hungary, citizens have been pushing back against Orban's policies. It is important to see the intersection of rights, for example, political and economic rights, and to understand that attacks against one ultimately affect us all. 

Every year, Amnesty International commemorates International Human Rights Day with a "Write for Rights" letter writing campaign. Last year more than four million actions were taken around the world, and more than 350,000 people wrote letters. Several people, who were featured last year were either released from prison, or removed from death row.
