...set up zoom with his red-headed stepchild, then lay in this perfect seaside hammock for awhile as we both listened to the nighttime seascape. 84 degrees, subtle wind, cold beer in hand. The plethora of coral fragments which wash up on most beaches here made for great acoustics. I hope you enjoy!

St. Croix Seascape at Night

...I enjoyed so many unique beaches on the Island... each with both subtle differences and massive differences acoustically, but the one beach where I was staying, I enjoyed sound sketches from the same place in different days and at different times of the day.
I normally aim the recorder in the opposite direction of the ocean... aimed at an off-shore rock or tree... something to bounce the sound, but on this occasion, I aimed Zoom directly out to sea. Do you hear any difference?
This was taken at sunset while I was busy snapping away at yet again another stunning sky.

i got to watch and feel different waves for over a week, being completely surrounded and dependent on them, awake and asleep, my body floating even when standing firmly on the ground. i think i absorbed some of their way of being - going from doesn't-matter to doesn't-matter, never really doing what you expect them to for too long.

It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal neoliberalist mould, we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Regardless of one’s point of reference, we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

For this episode of Transience we have invited sound artist and musician @alexandraspence to respond to these ideas. During this hour she takes us on a deep-blue murky journey through the depths of the ocean, confronting the grief and complexity that is held in a space inconceivably polluted and damaged by humans, yet also surfacing at moments to gaze at the light, beauty and wonder that will outlive us all. She has aptly named this mix sea dreams, and begins and ends with two tracks from her forthcoming album on Mappa, 'a veil, the sea'.

// Biography:

Born in Muenster in Germany, Jan Moehlenkamp started with classical instruments in his young childhood years. 
His passion to music was always obvious: He started with violin classes at the age of 7, played in a classic orchestra for a few years, and took piano lessons later on as well. His love for electronic music can´t be matched to a date actually but in the year 2000 he got more and more into producing, which resulted in a first gig in the context of a local producer´s competition. 

Influenced by the sound and the people of his study place Berlin, the first digital release was presented under the Munich-based label No Border Records in 2011, followed by his first EP on the same label and several digital releases on Pure* Records. In this context he also made an Edit of Russian Red´s "Loving Strangers" which high-scored several digital platforms and blogs and was featured by now famous artists such as Blond:ish, Alle Farben, FlicFlac and many many more. While in Berlin, he got more and more into the local electronic scene and was interviewed by the radio station BLN.FM, where he presented his first public set. 

By the time he went 30 years old he realized that he wanted to adopt to the roots of people who inspired him and to bring back the analog synths into the digital world. Jan´s style is quite varied, mainly it could be described as deep electronica: Mostly chilled, sometimes progressive and sometimes groovy but always with a lot of atmosphere.

Following an extended teaching journey in Europe, I staked my tent in the studio of CIUT radio in the heart of downtown Toronto. For the past 24 years, I've hosted NO MAN'S LAND and have earned a reputation among a loyal audience for unique, groove-driven explorations into the evolution of world music & global electronica.

From Indo-Arabic Dub to Afro-Latin Funk to Gypsy-Swing Electronica, sets flow seamlessly from soothing ancient rhythms and textures through rippling primitive &amp; progressive beats, always challenging cultural boundaries &amp; musical traditions. This genre-bending mixology has generated a throng of listeners locally and internationally + continues to win fans over the airwaves and on dancefloors. NO MAN'S LAND is considered by many to be the top world fusion radio show in Canada. 

Running the gamut of underground parties to mainstream stages, I've produced shows and played DJ sets with dozens of heroes and major international artists. I've spoken at numerous conferences & festivals discussing world music, cultural activism and social citizenship, and have toured across North America as a yoga DJ.

Working closely with the finest clubs and promoters on local and international concerts &amp; parties and through consistent work as an educator, radio producer and cultural ambassador, medman is instrumental in pushing global music forward, and in exposing the international airwaves to the best emerging &amp; established artists in the scene. That was a serious run-on sentence folks. Nevertheless, the recipe is to diligently seek out the finest independent grooves, hook into the leading music labels and spread a weekly healing dose to the masses. Music is our medicine.

I'm out in the woods or up in the mountains or down by the sea somewhere taking photographs, writing, sipping good whiskey and recording some of the silence and solitude of the beautifully quiet and uninhabited places. It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing - or refusing - to fit the patriarchal, racist, neoliberal mould we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. We discover that the stability we were instructed to obtain whether it be financial, political or ecological, is fleeting, if at all. The resulting anxiety is an instrument of neoliberalism that prevents many of us from being able to raise consciousness of the structural injustices that alienate us.

In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Barad teaches us that the world is a dynamic process of intra-activity and materialisation, an ongoing ebb and flow of agency. The Buddhist Law of Impermanence proves that nothing in this world is eternal. Regardless of ones point of reference we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

Each month host @lou_drago invites an artist to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate futures free from all systems of oppression.
