Breakdown - a confessional exploration on emotional abuse and healing- my journey

Official posting of 'If I Die' by Clockbutterflies. 

'If I Die' is a promise told by The Monarch, written with her own blood after a deadly encounter with a venomous spider pretending to be a butterfly. Once The Monarch had escaped the winter she began to finally spread her wings after 7 years of blistering cold.

For a moment, she felt happy. She could feel herself once more, her heartbeat returning, she felt love returning into her heart. She made a family, a big family just for her, but this is when she met the Witsy Whiskey Spider.

The snow could not kill The Monarch, but The Widow?
She inflicted a poison so deadly the butterfly's clock barely speaks to her anymore. It lie silent in her hand, reminding her of how still she laid those nights.

The nights with The Spider. 
The Monarch has never been good at telling people no, after all, The Monarch lives to serve others. 

But she said no, and she reasoned with the Spider, and she fought until it was clear her pleas would be unheard and this was when The Monarch lost her wings before truly ever getting to fly.

The day the venom activated within her skin, The Monarch's clock began racing backwards and if not for Atala, she would not be here any longer.

Atala would be the driving factor behind The Monarch writing the story 'Clockbutterflies'.

A reminder that there are still butterflies in this garden that need their help, and so The Monarch borrows time from her clock, but when will she pay the dues?

If I Die

'Homesick' is a special kind of project.

The Monarch finds themselves homebound from a seemingly diagnosable illness that has rendered the body weak, keeping them from work. 

While our butterfly has been home, sick she began to feel homesick for the snow, remembering how she first began to fall in love with frostbitten lips. This is when The Monarch finally stepped into her home recording booth and decided it was time, making 'Homesick' the first fully home recorded song in the Clockbutterflies saga with the butterflies teaming up with @schmiddi090 who produced the beat and mix & mastered the song.

Written in March, 2019 (with the lyric being completed at the beginning of 2022), Nobody's Fool is the newest Touch of Blue composition released since the band started putting out singles regularly, at the beginning of June, 2020 (and it's also the first song to be released that's music has been solely composed by Jason Dixon).

Almost certainly the most serious lyric Keiron Metcalfe has written, the song deals with 'abusive relationships'. Crucially, though, the song deals specifically with RECOGNISING one is in an abusive relationship and with disempowering the abuser and breaking their spell by confronting them and calling out their abuse.

This more positive angle on a serious subject is, in typical ToB fashion, highlighted by the song's arrangement, with, starting with Kevin England's overdriven guitar solo, the second half of the song portraying a feeling of euphoria and, in the final verse, Metcalfe almost mocking the abusive subject of his lyric. As suggested by the title, the overall tone of the song is one of defiance, of self-awareness and understanding and of knowledge and enlightenment.

Clockbutterflies is an idea dreamt up by The Monarch. This belief has become a mission for them to take on, to reach all the butterflies around the world who have been through harsh weather's such as they. 

To let them know they are not alone as they once felt, and that should they keep going there is a light and a family waiting for them on the other side.  

The music released through Clockbutterflies will entail heavy themes such as abusive relationships, domestic abuse, sexual abuse, childhood trauma, addiction, suicidal and loss, betrayal and much much more. 

More than anything, they will tell a story of The Monarch's life through a series of songs.

Though there are three original Butterflies, they will not be the last, over time more butterflies will join and have their voices be heard, each embodying a butterfly. 

Clockbutterflies is a mission to change a world so wrong and The Monarch will see it through.

Founded in 1987, the four original members of ToB have crafted a style of guitar-based, classic-sounding Rock which is truly their own, formed over the last 30 years from a wide and varied range of influences, including Dire Straits, Bruce Springsteen, Gary Moore, Spin Doctors, Pearl Jam, Bad Company, Simple Minds, Jeff Lynne, Train, Matchbox Twenty, Eric Clapton, AC/DC, The Eagles, Pink Floyd and many, many more.

With guitarist, Kevin England, being hugely influenced by the likes of Knopfler, Clapton, Gilmore and Moore, it is his own bluesy and country style that gives the band it's classic, Roots Rock sound. But a style of composing which has simplified over the years (and which is hugely influenced by Keiron Metcalfe's pursuit of catchy and memorable choruses and hooks) gives the band a definite tilt towards the 'POP' side of things. The result, therefore, is solid Rock songs which can range from melodic and moody to foot-tapping and sing-along to rollicking and raucous, but which are sprinkled with a smattering of populism which, as is the case with ALL good Pop songs, provides the listener with a comforting, deja-vu-like sense of familiarity. And that curious sense of knowing and understanding is well and truly supplemented by the wispy, universally reflective lyrics of Darren Bardoe or Keiron Metcalfe's own slightly more pointed words.

ToB's songs are ALL original, all unique; but there is a special, indescribable and unfathomable secret recipe instinctively mixed into the ingredients of each song which reminds the listener of something they can't quite put their finger on...... You THINK you've heard it before - but you haven't. You THINK it sounds like something/someone else - but you don't know who or what it is.
