Mainly using French grape varieties, the volcanic soil from the Calanchi Valley adds a new take on established variants. Once produced, the wines are stored to the sound of classical music in the cellar created by Noemia d’Amico and world renowned architect Luca Brasini. Made from tufo rocks, the cellar carves its way underneath the hanging garden, via magnificent structural arches that create an enchanting pathway to the library, adjoining a special room where tasting takes place amongst vintages from 30 years of Paolo e Noemia d’Amico wines.

The Tenuta di Fessina project was born in 2007, when after a series of trips aimed at studying and discovering the Etna terroir, Silvia Maestrelli, late Tuscan producer and pioneer on the volcano, decided to stop in Rovittello, on the northern side, where today the beating heart of Fessina resides. Here she was captivated by the uniqueness of the place, the very particular position of the soil, gathered between two volcanic slopes dating back to 1809 and 1911. From here it all begins, first in the North, precisely in 2007, then to the South West, one of the bets initials made in 2009, and finally to the East, in the municipality of Milo, starting from 2012. The philosophy of TDF project, is to collect and vinify different snapshots, all taken from different sides and only in historical reference areas. Jacopo Maniaci takes place at the winery in 2014 as winery director and in 2021 as CEO, he graduated Economics and communication at UNI of Messina, Sicily, and took a Master Degree at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo, Cuneo. His family is in restaurants and breeding in the mountains of Nebrodi, but he lives at the winery since 2017, taking care of the whole TF project. Fessina in particular rests on an alluvial residual, pyroclastic, a sandy and fine deposit, made of volcanic sand and pumice, dating back between 5,000 and 15,000 years old, draining and capable of guarantee elegance and verticality. Today the winery sells in 20 countries, with average 80.000 bottles of DOC Etna wines.

Marc’s guest today is Denise Marrone of Agricola Gian Piero Marrone, a family-run winery that can be found in Annunziata near La Morra, in the middle of the Langhe of Barolo. The winery is awarded the Best Italian Wine (Banco BPM) Trophy for Barolo Docg Bussia 2019 in 5StarWines – the Book wine selection in 2024.

For over a century: four generations of passion, tenacity and hard work.

The origins
Pietro Marrone was born in 1887, to a family that already cultivated grapes for the production of wine. Very passionate and extremely ambitious from an early age. In 1910, at the age of 23, he asked his father Edoardo if he could cultivate some vineyards using techniques that were revolutionary at the time.

The second generation
Carlo was born in 1924 and, along with his brothers Paolo and Michele and their sister Mariuccia, helped his father Pietro to expand the company, both in terms of quantity and quality.
After the Second World War, Carlo resumed his work in the vineyard and in the cellar with even greater passion than before. The wines became better and better and the farmhouse became known in the village as “Cascina Carlot”.

The third generation
Gian Piero was born in 1955. The wine gene had become part of the family’s DNA, passed down from generation to generation, so, when he finished high school, he devoted himself to the production of wines with the same passion as his father. The time was ripe to plant native white grapes in the vineyards: Arneis, Favorita and Moscato, in addition to the red varieties Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo, and of course Nebbiolo for Barbaresco and Barolo.

The fourth generation: Sorelle Marrone
Looking ambitiously to the future with a traditional heart Gian Piero’s three daughters, Denise, Serena and Valentina, work alongside Gian Piero to achieve increasingly ambitious goals.

Marc’s guest today is Amedeo Moretti Cuseri of Feudo Maccari, a winery in the Val di Noto region of south-eastern ​​Sicily. The winery was awarded the Best Organic White Wine Trophy for Animaetnea at 5StarWines – the Book wine selection in 2024.

After studying Business and Administration at Bocconi in Milan and obtaining an MSC in Finance in London, Amedeo worked in investment funds for a brief period and then devoted himself to the business side of fashion. In 2017, his father Antonio asked him to help manage the family businesses, but before accepting this key role, he capitalized on the opportunity to gain experience in other companies. He started working at JamesSuckling.com where he was the European Operations & Business Development Manager. With this position, he was to meet the best producers in the world and taste their products. In 2019, he actively began working at the family businesses. He is now the winery director and Italian market manager. He is a dynamic person, fascinated by nature and adventure travel. His many passions include running, often in the forests surrounding Tenuta Sette Ponti, in Sicily among the tumuli, and at the Vendicari oasis, which faces Feudo Maccari. Wherever he is, the backdrop is always 360 degrees of pure natural beauty. Living outside Tuscany for a long time and traveling often allowed him to experience diverse cultures and learn about their needs. He always came home enriched with experiences that helped him take a modern approach to the company. Amedeo is the youngest of the Moretti Cuseri family and this is precisely what makes him the perfect bond between tradition and innovation.

Vintner's Diary is a 100% Latina-Owned wine brand. The Robledo family began working in the 1940s as Mexican vineyard laborers in Napa and Sonoma. Today, as three generations of Latina vintners, Maria, Vanessa and Jocelyn farm their own land and make wine from the grapes they cultivate. 

They believe that as vintners, their diary is the wine. All the sacrifices and stories that are experienced throughout the growing season are packaged in each bottle of wine that they produce.

Cynthia is a wine content creator, author and judge for several international wine competitions. She designs and presents events for embassies, corporate and private clients, develops Italian wine collections for restaurants and private clients and works with Italian wineries to train their sales and export staff. Hosting Voices has increased her commitment to DEI in the wine sector, interviewing emerging and established wine professionals and discussing topics such as inclusivity, equity, language, sustainability and challenges facing under-represented groups and cultures as they move into careers in wine. As a certified WSET Educator, Cynthia is passionate about developing wine education for a future that will have a place at the table for anyone interested in wine.
