Alana C. Marks discovered a love of writing as an adolescent when she began writing a pen pal. One pen pal soon grew to a multitude as her letters spread to friends near and far. When her children were born, her nightly story telling talents blossomed and from that ritual her first novel, Unbroken Bones, was born.  Writing is Alana's hobby which she does in her spare time between managing her business and traveling abroad. Do we want history teachers taking on such a role, or should they stick to historical facts? “If that's indoctrination,” Bruce says, “I'll plead guilty to it, but I don't think you can teach any subject blandly or without any kind of conviction.” Later, Bruce explains that he wants his students to find their voice, to stand up for principle, whether or not it aligns with their teachers’ or classmates’ perspectives. “I would always try to find my way to stand next to the minority opinion, always stand close to that man or woman who's standing up and arguing for principle, and I would tell 'em you might be one person facing a hurricane, but you've got to have strong roots. You have to have the courage of your convictions. These are your friends. Don't worry about being in the minority.”

Aster Bato Mohamed has lived an extraordinary life.  Her strong faith, instilled in her by her brother Obo Deressa sustained her throughout her remarkable life’s journey that has taken her around the world. Born in the small Ethiopian village of Aira, Aster’s odyssey has taken her from Ethiopia to Germany, and finally, to America.  Dedicating her life to education, Aster has been honored with multiple prestigious awards for her many achievements inside and outside the classroom throughout her long career in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system. Now retired, Aster continues to live in Florida and is the proud mother of three successful children and a loving grandmother.
