The GBHBL Whiplash - Episode 431: Interview: Moon Reaper

Northern Irish metal outfit Archives released their brand-new album, ‘No Bliss in Ignorance’ on June 7th, 2024.

Hailing from Northern Ireland and formed in 2020, the hefty quintet have worked diligently to achieve their aim of producing fierce music, laced with boundless energy and memorable hooks which has landed them a wealth of national radio and press support plus a recent sold-out opening slot with Skindred & a main support slot at Techfest Techabiliation 2023 alongside Hacktivist & Martyr Defiled.

New tour dates will commence in Bristol on 20th June before the band stop of in Luton, Norwich, Birmingham, Coalville, Newport, London and Dublin, concluding in Galway on 13th July.

When you look at the trajectory of Archives, it’s fair to say that they’re on an upward curve. Which is all the more impressive when you take into account that they only formed in 2020. That’s four years to get to this point, and based off what we’re hearing on No Bliss in Ignorance, there is no ceiling on this band.

You might have expected something great from Archives, but this great? They have smashed it out of the park here.

Cleveland death metal legends-in-waiting 200 Stab Wounds return with ‘Manual Manic Procedures’, a superlative sophomore effort that follows 2021’s Slave to the Scalpel, their tour de force debut. It is out on June 28th, 2024, via Metal Blade Records.

If Slave to the Scalpel was the sound of 200 Stab Wounds kicking down the door of the death metal party, Manual Manic Procedures is the sound of them tearing it up on the dance floor. Albeit, in a way that leaves onlookers horrified and repulsed.

It’s hard to offer anything fresh sounding in this genre, least of all when the focus is still on delivering garish and grim death metal sounds. Yet, 200 Stab Wounds already proved they had plenty to offer with their debut, and now they surpass that high bar with an album of contemporary heaviness that isn’t afraid to look outside the death metal genre for inspiration.

We spoke to guitarist Raymond MacDonald about the album, and what it has taken for 200 Stab Wounds to get to this place. Digging deep into the creative process, his personal input, why this is such a satisfying release for the band, and so much more.

German post-hardcore trio Future Palace are back and with a brand-new album, ‘Distortion’, due for release on 6th September via Arising Empire.

Future Palace's music has always explored internal struggles, and Distortion is the brutal climax of this approach. The album title, derived from the psychological term cognitive distortion, reflects a world in which changing perceptions trap individuals in recurring pitfalls. Distortion addresses various mental illnesses and personal struggles, from ADHD to depression to narcissism. The band's third album is a powerful force of emotions, cycles, and cries of desperation, overwhelming listeners with its intensity.

We spoke to vocalist Maria about the new album, the gruelling recording process, and the stress they, as a group, experienced. We also delved into the creative mind of Future Palace, evolving as a band, touring constantly and consistently, dealing with a cacophony of hate, and so much more.

Steve, Lindsey, and special guest, Heather Barnes (Steve’s wife) discuss the behavior and teaching techniques of two cinematic music teachers, Fletcher from Whiplash and Mr. Holland from Mr. Holland’s Opus. As fellow children of musicians, Lindsey and Heather share their experience growing up with a father who wanted to encourage true excellence from their students. Steve also talks about his mentors and how they shaped him. And we all think about what it really takes to encourage greatness as a mentor/teacher. 

We also talk about the unique stories these teachers spout to motivate their students. Sometimes, these same stories serve as ugly mirrors to their true, flawed philosophies. Expect the usual search for truth served with bountiful doses of vulnerability and humor. It’s what you can always expect from 1 of my Stories.
